THE NEW MARKET LEADERS - FRED WIERSEMA

====================================================================================

When I read any book, I scribble my comments / notes in the margins

These reflect my views / opinions about what the author is saying – including my disagreement

Often, my comments are in the nature of telling myself :

Hey ! We should try out this idea in our own business ( Head-hunting / Online Recruitment )

Following are my comments re :

THE NEW MARKET LEADERS - FRED WIERSEMA

=====================================================================================

Pg. No. 1

·         (07-11-04)

Pg. No. 2

·         Brand re-calls

Pg. No. 3

·         Hopefully, JAM will create an altogether NEW market-that does not exist today. There is no doubt; we (WWJ) would set the standards.

·         In JAM, we will “marry” cell-phone with Internet.

·         We plan to transform the way job-search gets done.

Pg. No. 5

·         Mobile Service Providers are launching a new service every week (Reliance’s R-World has more than a hundred!). Amongst all this cacophony, will JAM succeed to capture the “imagination” of cell-phone users?

·         Will JAM succeed because it fulfils a “Need”?

·         Right now, India, there are 2 types of scarcities (1) Scarcity of competent employable professionals. There are plenty of jobs for them (2) scarcity of jobs for millions of unemployed-most of whom are “unemployable for lack of skills.

·         Thru JAM we will try to exploit scarcity No. 1

·         Thru VEE, we will try to exploit scarcity #2

·         (22-06-05)

·         Employable will be customers of JAM & unemployables will be customers of VEE.

Pg. No. 7

·         I am depending upon assumption that jobseekers are (1) hard pressed for time (2) what to be “freed” from PC / Internet (3) want convenience (of being able to apply from their mobile). JAM pays attention to these “needs”.

·         “Unemployable” unemployed have plenty of time, so conducting job searches on VEE, would be quite ok with them.

·         It is “Employable”-but already employed who are hard-pressed for time. They will prefer JAM.

Pg. No. 8

·         In may be 6/8 weeks, we shall know whether we belong here! – assuming that, by and of this month, we are able to launch FREE TRIAL of JAM on TATA / MTNL & Airtel Networks.

·         (07-11-04)

·         After 7 months, we are trying to “crawl”. Airtel / MTNL need to “prelaunch” their services-but seem to be reluctant. They are also unwilling to spend money on “market-promotion”. We are trying to promote on our own.

·         (22-06-05)

Pg. No. 9

·         Monster (India) & Naukri claim 3000 / 5000 new resumes daily. How soon can we overtake those figs? But then revenues of jobsites do NOT come from jobseekers!

·         That would require knowing, “how many” new corporates become their subscribers-daily?

Pg. No. 12

·         Monster (India)’s purchase of Jobs-Ahead, a few months back, was for same reason.

·         Today’s paper says Monster’s “market-share” (how do you measure?) has gone-up from 20% to 60% as a result of acquiring Jobs Ahead.

·         (22-06-05)

Pg. No. 16

·         E-brokerage

·         Is this the one purchased by VSNL, 2 days back?

Pg. No. 17

·         Only Indian co.!

Pg. No. 20

·         We could fall into this category.

Pg. No. 25

·         Flipdog.com faced same problem. They aggregated job-advts. but did not know, how to “monetize” these no’s.

·         (11-11-04)

Pg. No. 26

·         So, customer-base must keep growing too.

·         JAM is a totally “New” space / market. To be able to “claim” this space, we would need big no’s (of subscribers) AND big revenues – fast too!

Pg. No. 27

·         Virtuous Circle.

Pg. No. 45

·         WWJ / JAM may end up threatening conventional job-sites – although I want to keep away from such a posture & make jobsites our “partners”.

·         For this reason, we have started work on designing / developing a portal (Virtual Employment Exchange-VEE) which would network with a large no. of jobsites. Expect to be ready by Aug. 05.

·         (22-06-05)

Pg. No. 46

·         250,000 jobs on Indian jobsites just cannot be searched in any reasonable time. JAM promises to solve this problem (for jobseekers) by “digesting” & delivering concise / precise info. Which is relevant to the jobseekers?

·         Who has time to visit dozens of jobsites every day?

·         JAM will deliver alerts strictly based on “permission”

·         It is no different with jobsites. A jobseeker just cannot keep up!

·         Most jobseekers cannot re call names of more than 4/5 jobsites at the most!

Pg. No. 47

·         As long as WWJ / JAM serves only Indian jobseekers (thru 6/8 Indian Mobile service providers), our server too will “idle” at night! You cannot deliver job alerts at night.

·         C. K. Prahalad (and Jack Trout) say “customers don’t know, what they want”! They do buy horrible gadgets which they never use!

·         On internet, there is no way to keep JAM included! Secret, your Business Model & your Revenue Model.

·         30/60 day old job-advts. Are useless junk. Those jobs are already filled.

Pg. No. 48

·         JAM proposes to turn this “reality” into a business opportunity!

·         With JAM, jobseekers will be able to bypass the jobsites.

Pg. No. 50

·         Except for the Image Builder (Guru Mine), rest of JAM is easily replica table. So, the only way to postpone / delay competition is to tie-up with all the 8 MSP’s as content-provider. That would raise entry-barrier.

·         One idea behind creating VEE of dozens of jobsites is to divert their attention from WWJ / JAM & keep them focussed on their existing corporate-subscribers. Jobsites get 100% of their revenues from corporates whereas; WWJ / JAM will get 100% of its revenue from jobseekers.

·         (22-06-05)

Pg. No. 51

·         One estimate says, there are 40,000 jobsites!

Pg. No. 52

·         Jack Trout “Differentiable or Die”

·         Thru VEE we want jobsites to remain focussed on their conventional / traditional

a)    Processes

-          Job Post

-          Job Search

-          Resume post

-          Resume Search

&

b)    Clientele

(Viz: corporates)

Pg. No. 53

·         In India there are 200 jobsites.

Pg. No. 54

·         Obviously HR mgrs. will not be able to handle this huge flood of resumes. To help them store & retrieve & search these oceans of resumes, we will offer them (partially) FREE use of RecruitGuru.com. They can upload (free) only Image Builders.

·         For jobseekers, JAM will try to rectify this situation. But, in the process, the no. of resumes reaching mailboxes of HR mgrs. wills 90 up 10/20/100 times!

·         This could also happen if jobseekers get access to 100,000 job-advts. From any partner jobsite of VEE.

·         Could this happen to Broadband capacities & 3G mobile networks?

Pg. No. 55

·         Pf course this is yet to happen here. – Although mobile telephony prices are dropping.

·         This is a perpetual cycle.

Pg. No. 56

·         When we offer JAS (Job Advt. Summary) to Newspapers / TV Channels / Cyber Cafes / Colleges / Entrepreneurs etc., we are allowing them to “package / repackage” same info.in many different ways.

·         JAM does this

·         Email cost

·         We plan to do 50 with 600+ mobile service providers of the world.

Pg. No. 57

·         Without any print / TV / internet advt. support, getting customers to visit WWJ is proving difficult.

·         JAM seeks to address this issue relation to conducting job searches every day on dozens of jobsites – spending 2/3 hours daily – from amongst thousands of new job-advts. Being posted every day!

·         This is equally true of “already employed” in India – may be more so, because, they, on-an-average, spend 2/3 hours on the road every day, travelling to / from workplace. But unemployed have all the time in the world!

·         Millions of unemployed in India do not know what to do with time.

Pg. No. 58

·         This means we compete, not with jobsites-or newspapers or with any other media by which people “search” for jobs-but with the “time” consumed in each of these methods.

·         So, if a jobseeker all the job-advts. From one single jobsite he would save time. VEE would create such scenario.

·         I do hope JAM will prove us to be such “new market leader”.

·         There is no “second” chance to sell.

·         I suppose if 6/8 mobile service providers start promoting JAM amongst their 45 million subscribers, that should suffice to direct the attention of jobseekers from jobsites to JAM.

·         Diwali Day = 12-11-2004.

Pg. No. 59

·         With just 3 of us in Recruit Guru right now, this is no problem! Abhi – Deepak & I have a clear / common goal.

Pg. No. 60

·         With a huge churn in a company’s employees and in its customer-base, it is practically impossible to develop a “personalized” relationship with millions of customers – BUT – whether you know him by his name or not, when a customer calls, his problem must be solved immediately & courteously.

·         This attitude must be cultivated – and it is the job of CEO.

·         Abhi

·         Possible only if there are, no more than a few hundred!

Pg. No. 61

·         I have plans under which JAM subscribers (jobseekers) will “Rate / Rank” the job-advertisers (Cos) based on several criteria, starting with feedback against their job-applications

·         JAM must enable both, MSPs & Jobsites, to be able to raise their revenues. We succeed if they succeed!

Pg. No. 62

·         Someday we will find that way – by delivering customised job-alerts to jobseekers on their home TVs – in addition to delivering these on their mobiles / PCs / PDAs / etc.

·         VEE could be one such way-since there will always be a large majority who would want to search for jobs on jobsites.

·         Our “niche” = jobseekers amongst mobile phone owners.

·         To start with, Monster India / Jobs Ahead / Naukri / Job Street / times jobs are our “established rivals” – all of whom are thousands of times “richer in resources” than us.

Pg. No. 63

·         Webpages, “Ownership Issues” & “WWJ is Job Nirvana”, clearly bring out what distinguishes us.

·         Differentiate or Die.

·         For this JAM, would need to get a lot of “press” – in technical & in popular newspapers / magazines etc.

·         We are trying to get free publicity thru JAS.

Pg. No. 64

·         We will need

1.    Experienced IT & Non-IT professionals

2.    Fresh Graduates (of all kinds)

3.    (Someday) Blue-collar workers, too.

·         We would have to find media to deliver to jobseekers – 40 odd promotional emails which I have prepared.

·         I have none! It is Holy-wood or Bust!

·         May be VEE could turn out to be our “alternative scenario”! – except, we ourselves will not earn any revenue directly from deployment of VEE on a no. of jobsites. We plan / hope to be able to “monetize” the job-advts. & resumes that we hope to receive from partner – jobsites

·         (22-06-05)

Pg. No. 65

·         To receive fresh job-alerts on their mobiles daily-and to be able to apply online with a single click on their mobiles.

Pg. No. 66

·         None of our rivals (jobsites) can make this claim.

·         Or, write your Business Model, on the back of a business card!

Pg. No. 67

·         (“Where Jobs Come Searching For You – on Your Mobile”

·         “Where you apply online – with a single click of your Mobile”)

·         A “Mobile” – experience is going to be VERY DIFFERENT as compared to job-search on a PC – Bound – chained – tethered

·         Free / on-the Go / Unfettered / unshackled

·         We will need these from journalists & authors & writers

·         While creating VEE, we must emphasize to jobsites that joining VEE would make them earn more.

·         (23-06-05)

·         Read mu today’s note no VEE business-model.

Pg. No. 68

·         Punch line of RecruitGuru.com reads “The future of recruitment web-services”.

·         Every page of WWJ, at bottom, carries “Abhinandan” to establish that the visitor is “talking / listening” to a real person – to whom he can email or phone.

·         We will advertise – very selectively & minimum clutter – when we have enough money. Till then, we must depend upon mobile service providers themselves – to “publicise” our service – amongst their 45 million subscribers.

Pg. No. 69

·         Once JAM (free trial) gets launched on TATA Indicium (-and hopefully, on MTNL / Airtel networks), we will restart our promotional email campaign to 202 million email IDs which we have. I also propose to handover those 40 + emails to the MSPs & encourage them to launch their own email campaign amongst their own subscribers.

·         After 7 months, I don’t think they will bother!

·         I believe my emails do convey our value-proposition quite well.

·         We too, will send 2 emails per week – for 20 weeks. Cost is so little.

·         We have temporarily suspended email campaign – awaiting MTNL’s official decision to make job-alerts FREE.

Pg. No. 70

·         In my today’s note re: VEE, this is exactly what I have advocated. In the beginning, we will target those jobsites which have a small resume database and are relatively unknown / insignificant players in E-recruitment. They are most likely to join VEE, because they have nothing to lose & a lot to gain.

·         (23-06-05)

·         There are plenty of small jobsites with meagre revenues

·         For those IT pros who wish to take up jobs in USA, we must download job-ads. From American jobsites. They are quite likely to click “Apply Online” 5 times as often as those jobseekers that are looking for local jobs.

Pg. No. 72

·         JAM too.

Ø  Cuts down on “time” (not having to read / go thru hundreds of job advts.)

Ø  Delivers “FRESH” advts. (improvement in delivery)

Ø  Delivers “Relevant” advts. (customised for each jobseeker)

·         When we introduce JAB (Job Ad Broadcast), JAM would get really FAST! It will reach “suitable” candidates (from all over the country) – within minutes of a HR managers posting a Job Ad!

Pg. No. 73

·         We will get all kinds of “demands” from mobile service providers. Obviously, we will pay attention to those “demands” which are “common” amongst all MSPs

Pg. No. 74

·         Thru launch of VEE, I hope, we will permit jobseekers to continue with their habit of job search. Gradually more & more will switch to JAM.

·         Obviously jobseekers used to job search on jobsites (-and free apply online) may not, readily switchover to JAM.

·         There is no way WWJ / JAM could replicate the “marketing / delivery / billing / collection” resources that already exist with the mobile service providers.

·         In VEE, too, each partner jobsite will look after its own marketing / billing / collection etc.

·         (23-06-05)

Pg. No. 75

·         JAM cannot succeed without these.

·         Nor can VEE.

·         Pg. No. 76

·         Ours surely are!

·         Sounds like me

·         I will only make low risk commitments.

·         For us, it is either BOOM or BUST!

Pg. No. 77

·         With only one server, WWJ will have “capacity limitations” – but, if JAM picks-up, as we hope it will, adding new servers fast, will not pose any problem. We will build capacity as we go forward – remaining only slightly ahead of demand. We will also add manpower similarly.

·         We plan to use MSPs marketing muscle to find customers.

·         We cannot depend upon them solely. We have to do our own promo.

·         I can risk no such bet. For me, it has to be other way around!

·         But what if FUTURE is not willing to bet on you? As it usually happens!

·         (23-06-05)

Pg. No. 78

·         JAM & VEE are my visions. I don’t know if I have “the capacity” – but I am certainly going to try hard.

·         Since I don’t have to worry about “satisfying” any banker / investor / venture capitalist / share – holder etc., I would not hesitate to “plough-back” into JAM / Recruit Guru, all that I earn – my own personal needs being “Nil”! I don’t have to “answer” anyone for my actions.

·         (12-11-04)

·         Pg. No. 80

·         Unless JAM brings (to jobseekers) more “interview-calls” as compared to “applying online” for free-from a jobsite, it cannot “click”! Getting an interview-call is THE VALUE!

·         I must remember this, while inviting them to “Review” JAM – hopefully, sometime by March 2005 (when I can show them “success”

·         We are nowhere near “success” & I must wait!

Pg. No. 81

·         JAM, obviously cannot deliver jobs-but, for a jobseeker, “delivering job-alerts on mobile” is only a “process of delivery” not a “RESULT”! But for him “Getting an Interview-call” (or even some feedback from advertiser) is a Result.

·         Hopefully, someday, WWJ & VEE will be able to exchange data. then we will succeed in “Sending / Receiving Interview Calls”

·         FADS.

Pg. No. 82

·         Motivation (negative, though) : Fear of being left-out of a “Dream Job” – unless I subscribe to JAM – since there is no other alternative?

·         I suppose this is at the root of mobile-phone subscriptions surging ahead at 2 million / month in India. Instant connection / Instant gratification. Mobile phone enables you to “Utilise” TIME, which you would have otherwise WASTED, while travelling.

·         How many jobsites can you visit? & how long? & for how many days?

·         Trade-off.

Pg. No. 83

·         There is no problem in life, unless you have “options” of decisions / actions. Hence death is not a problem since there is no option!

Pg. No. 85

·         Change

·         Y Axis

·         Stability

·         Youngsters are impatient with slow pace of change. They want to get on with their lives FAST. They want instant gratification. They want to appear (to their peers & colleagues) that they are dynamic / living-it-up / in the fast lane. They want to show-off that they are not afraid to “experiment / try “anything!

Pg. No. 86

·         The waiter at Radhakrishna Hotel, used to ask me, “Sir, same?” – And I would say “Same” – and he would bring me my usual Pizza! As simple & predictable as that!

·         Hopefully, jobseekers who will conduct job-searches on VEE, would realize the advantage of changing over to JAM.

·         On VEE, they will not get disrupted. They will continue their old-fashioned   job searches

·         For this, it would be better to charge Rs. 0.50 (or Rs. 1.0) for every job-alert delivered (as PUSH SMS) – rather than a fixed monthly subscription). Senior Executives may not want to click “Apply Online” but may still want to know what kinds of jobs are available in the market. The repeated PULLING of job-alerts would familiarise them with JAM.

·         We are introducing a web-page (I am Senior) – to take care of this

·         Airtel / MTNL have decided to send job-alerts for FREE.

Pg. No. 87

·         No “options / choice” to struggle with.

Pg. No. 88

·         ll this proves that we need to download many more jobs for junior-level & fresher’s.

·         We plan to offer free trial of JAM to all the 45 million mobile subscribers

·         S/The lure of the “Unknown” – curiosity to know what lies around the bend in the bend in the straight road

·         AW Guys

Pg. No. 89

·         I hope this is the way they feel about JAM when they try-out. Most IT guys have access to

-          PC

-          Internet

-          Mobile.

·         If they like JAM, they could spread the good word like a wild fire!

·         They should appreciate JAM because it is so different and for its “technology”.

·         With a huge demand for S/W professionals, everywhere, one of the topmost priorities for S/W guys is to “advance their career” thru a job-change. JAM will help them.

Ø  JAM / WWJ is for “employable” professional who are in short-supply (already employed)

Ø  VEE will be for (mostly) “unemployable” persons (lacking necessary skills / experience) – most of whom are currently unemployed. Each has its own “Market”.

·         (23-06-05)

Pg. No. 93

·         But no editor / journalist seem interested to write about JAM. I sent email to 150 of them!

·         (23-06-05)

·         We must keep trying for this.

·         After reading articles about JAM in newspapers / magazines, searchers would want to “experiment” & experience JAM on their own-and spread the word, if they like it.

Pg. No. 94

·         A week back, newspapers reported that Jeff Taylor is learning Monster to start a “new venture” by Aug. 2005. Beyond that, he will continue as an “advisor”.

·         (23-06-05)

·         I can do no such thing – at age 71! I must figure-out what else.

·         If JAS offer clicks with 10/15 newspapers, it could, eventually roll-out on a large no. of newspapers – bringing us free publicity.

Pg. No. 95

·         I would do this now.

·         This set may love job-alerts delivered on their mobiles by delegating “Search” to JAM

Pg. No. 96

·         By entering their “Job-Preferences”, these people are “hiring” the expertise of WWJ / JAM, viz: spidering jobadvt / mining / match-making etc. something they cannot do on their own.

Pg. No. 97

·         But we will “deliver” these features (to jobseekers & corporates) thru VEE partner sites, keeping a background of Recruitguru.com.

·         WWJ will not offer “job search” (or even Resume Search) we must consistently maintain:

Ø  Stop Searching for Jobs.

Ø  Let jobs come Searching for you

·         WWJ is NOT a (typical) jobsite – and we will repeat this again & again.

Pg. No. 100

·         Will they discuss the results of JAM free trial with their mobile-owning friends? To impress them with what “they” have “discovered?”

·         Towards this end, I intend teeing-up with India times “MCHAT” (SMS on 8888)

 Pg. No. 101

·         We too, would need to “Guide” jobseekers in the proper selection of “Job Preferences” – which would generate for them, most “relevant” (to their needs), and job-alerts.

Pg. No. 102

·         As soon as we can afford, we must get someone like Inder Sethi – on a full time basis, for such “educating / guiding” of JAM subscribers – mostly thru email.

·         (12-11-04) Diwali

·         What Abhi is doing right now?

·         (23-06-05)

Pg. No. 104

·         See our webpage “Alternative?” where we have provided links to (maybe) 150 competition jobsites where a jobseeker van conduct job search.

·         Visiting these jobsites (for job-searches) will drive home our USP

·         Viz: we “aggregate” jobs from all of these jobsites – so that you don’t need to visit them.

·         WWJ would have no job-advts. of its own. All job-ads will be downloaded from diff. jobsites. WWJ advts as an aggregator. WWJ will offer wide choices, day-after-day, and FRESH choices everyday-something which no website does today.

·         (13-11-04)

Pg. No. 105

·         Unlikely that anyone will buy a $1 billion company in order to satisfy just one customer!

·         WWJ is solely devoted to Jobs – except, it is NOT a jobsite.

Pg. No. 106

·         Although, our “Job Alert Preview (JAP)” page does show a jobseeker, what kind of “alerts” he can expect to receive, upon his selecting / choosing, a set of “job preferences”, this page does not “GUIDE” him in making better choices.

·         We should improve this.

·         We dropped a separate page & integrated it with REGISTER page.

·         Walkman did & may be PlayStation too.

·         I hope, after experimenting with JAM, they would spread the word.

·         This could happen if many newspapers start publishing JAM on a daily basis (kind of a syndicated column).

Pg. No. 107

·         Once we have compiled “Apply Online” click history of a jobseeker for 4/6 months, we would compile statistical profile / trend / pattern / of the “Likes” & “Dislikes” of each jobseeker and we would be in a position to “Recommend” to him, new job-advts., which would be of interest to him.

·         We have thought of “Ask Any Jammer” page.

·         This will be very easy to develop for JAM subscribers.

·         WWJ too would have many online databases / profiles / tools / interactive games etc. to keep the jobseeker engaged & enlightened.

Pg. No. 108

·         Even before launch of WWJ / JAM, we have planned to launch a series of new “features” in quick succession.

·         Read files:

·         Co-creating Values

·         Reputation System

·         WWJ overview

·         Global Recruiter etc.

·         & now VEE (Virtual Employment Exchange).

·         Let us hope JAM falls in this Category.

·         Preventing competition for JAM would require teeing-up with all MSPs

·         Preventing competition for VEE would require teeing up with a large (50?) no. of small / medium jobsites. We also think that Monster / Naukri will refuse to tie-up with us (VEE) or with any other “copycat” exchange.

·         (23-06-05)

Pg. No. 109

·         If WWJ & VEE gets huge success, it could also spell a “radical transformation” of 3P.

·         Despite the fact that very few owners use even 20% features of their mobiles! “Value” for Nokia would be right thing!

Pg. No. 110

·         520 million cell-phones are expected to be sold worldwide in 2004.

·         More than 720 million in 2005.

Pg. No. 111

·         JAM is also a “wireless internet” application-and DoCoMo has been my inspiration.

·         Within 2 years of launch, SKYPE got 40 million subscribers & currently adding 150,000 per day.

·         I suppose this means “New” subscribers.

·         We hope to be the next biggest success story-by delivering job-alerts to many millions of Indians-and someday citizens of other countries as well.

·         This is the job-seeking group-willing to change jobs.

·         In India too, nearly 70% of mobile subscribers fall in this age group.

Pg. No. 112

·         Abhi

Pg. No. 114

·         WWJ would fit this definition

·         So would VEE. I propose calling it “Guru Net” – The Exchange.

·         (23-06-05)

·         If JAM succeeds, - and I am sure it will confound the big jobsites – as to how to respond! It would not be practically impossible for them to change their business-model & their revenue-model – nor would I want them to copy our model.

·         By not allowing corporates to post their job-advts. Directly on WWJ, I want jobsites to survive and grow. I don’t want jobsites to cross-over into our “territory”. I intend to do this by keeping out of their territory.

·         By participating in VEE, jobsites will not want to compete with WWJ. They cannot jettison their revenue-model.

·         (13-11-04)

Pg. No. 115

·         We will call this JAB (Job Advt. Broadcast). It will be made an integral part of “Job Post” feature (on VEE) for the corporates. However, my current thought is make this feature FREE for the Corporate Advertisers.

·         Once, hundreds of JABS are getting delivered to millions of JAM subscribers, within minutes (-and that too FREE) – them there is a distinct probability that lakhs of “Apply Online” will happen-where we will make money.

·         (23-06-05)

·         Although I have no intention to permit corporates to conduct “Resume-Searches” on WWJ, if we do manage to build-up a subscriber base of (Say) 5 million jobseekers, I would enable any corporate to “search & select” – a customised “target-group” of resumes (from amongst these 5 million) and be able to “broadcast / blast” it’s job-advt. (to such a group) for Rs. 1/= per email message. This will be a “Job Blasting” service on RecruitGuru.com.

·         I hope, someday, we would have many more MSPs (-and jobsites?) as our “partners”.

Pg. No. 116

·         One will be able to say this for VEE, in respect of Job Advts.

·         We have a much sharper focus viz: a vehicle for exchange of info. between jobseekers & employers.

·         We plan to do this from first Year.

·         Yesterday we eared Rs. 30/=

·         For this, we will largely depend upon MSPs

·         Now realising that such dependence will not work, we are desperately seeking ways & means to get lots of FREE publicity for JAM (-thru JAS).

Pg. No. 117

·         At first glance (superficially), WWJ & VEE appear to be “inconsistencies” but if you think deep, they will “Synergise” each other.

·         (23-06-05)

·         We will start with MSPs, and then move to TV channels – then to print media & so no.

·         Next week we will send JAS proposal to 480 small town newspapers.

·         For us “newbies” are fresh graduates (3.5 lakh / year)

·         How can we reach the message of JAM amongst the fresh graduates? Where can we find their email ID’s? Shall we write to the colleges?

Pg. No. 118

·         Under what “category” will Yahoo place WWJ? We must tell them, NOT to categorise WWJ as a “jobsite” – then we are one amongst 40,000! May be should tell them to create Q NEW category called JAM! (Job Alert on Mobile)

·         (13-11-04)

Pg. No. 119

·         WWJ could be categorised under this

·         On WWJ, we tell subscribers, “Don’t visit us again-we will visit YOU daily”!

Pg. No. 120

·         In India Yahoo has tied-up with Rediff

Pg. No. 121

·         Will JAM go down with jobseekers like this? Every job-alert SMS will carry this-as also every “Apply Online” SMS.

·         How many such SMS will fly daily?

Pg. No. 122

·         I suppose editors will take notice (of JAM / WWJ) after they receive our JAS proposal.

·         WWJ may sound like WWF but it is not as easy to speak-and hear-as JAM!

Pg. No. 123

·         We don’t have money to advertise on TV – but maybe I can, offer “streaming” job-alerts as “FREE” content to IN-Cable / Raheja Cable & get publicity in return.

·         We can get TV channels interested if 50 newspapers sign up for JAS. Then “Selling” will get easy.

·         We have to reach-not only those who currently visit jobsites for job search-but also who have never searched for a job online. This latter-is much bigger group.

·         Most of these are “unemployed” from small towns, where internet penetration is very poor. But good news is that BSNL / Reliance / TATA are moving their mobile networks in these towns in a very aggressive way.

·         Someday we will partner with broadcasters for JAT (Job Alert on TV) Read my note on this.

Pg. No. 124

·         I have planned: Did you JAM today? JAM kaya kya? JAM kar diya!

·         Same with us. We have no money to spend on publicity.

Pg. No. 125

·         14-11-09 Nehru’s Birthday.

·         At WWJ too, there is no idle / aimless “browsing”. WWJ goes one step beyond even Amazon – where every visit is for a single one time purchase. At WWJ, jobseekers will come (once?) for a long term “service-contract” – like telephone / electricity / water / Gas delivery contracts.

Pg. No. 128

·         Can we imagine a scenario where WWJ “senses” that a particular jobseeker’s (1) Salary is stagnating (2) Up ward growth (up the hierarchy ladder) is slowing down (3) Tenure is getting stretched too long with the same employer etc. etc.

·         -AND then “alert” him about these “malfunctions”? Not only this scenario is entirely feasible, we intend to do this exactly! If WWJ claims to be a jobseeker’s “Career-Guardian”, to do so, is at the CORE of its service. Image-Builder will help us do this!

·         WWJ will even “recommend” to each jobseeker

Ø  Kind of jobs

Ø  Kind of Employers

Ø  Kind of salary that he should explore.

·         JAM will streamline job search & resume-forwarding, with a minimum effort on the part of jobseekers.

Pg. No. 130

·         Continuously compiling each jobseeker’s “percentile-score” for Function / Salary / Tenure / Designation-Level etc. will enable our software to figure-out, who is falling behind (amongst thousands of comparable PEERS) – and alert him for taking some corrective steps for making course-correction.

·         We too, will need to do this soon.

·         When a person clicks “apply online” from his mobile, he does not KNOW that his resume got delivered. He only assumes that it did. But, as a result, he starts getting interview-calls, and then he has POD (Proof of Delivery)!

Pg. No. 132

·         Someday, we will be able to say something like this in respect of the jobseeker population of India – with respect to the no. of times they use “Apply Online” / week.

Pg. No. 133

·         “Speed” (of being able to view freshest jobs & being able to apply online) is certainly KAM’s USP as well.

·         In JAB (Job Alert Broadcast), we would be sending out SMS to suitable candidates within minutes of a job getting posted. In the 160 characters of SMS, if we can succeed in squeezing “Date / Time” of job posting then, it could convince jobseekers of our “SPEED”.

·         JAM will certainly be much faster than any jobsite. Also true of JAM.

·         JAM will Not be

Pg. No. 134

·         We think so too. A jobseeker wants his resume to reach HR mgrs. PC first – before all others.

·         3650 days

·         4300 outlets

·         REACH

·         Spider / Miner / Match Maker / Guru Miner are our “components”

·         Will this make JAM – the McDonald of jobseekers? Should.

·         Only jobs posted on various jobsites during last 24 hrs.

·         As per a jobseeker’s own “Job-Preferences”

Pg. No. 135

·         If our software continuously analyses the “job-preferences” getting entered by jobseekers-then we can (statistically) decide as to what kind of jobs are in great demand – and automatically adjust our SPIDER to go out & fetch those kinds of job-advts. From diff. jobsites or corporate websites. This is quite straight-forward

·         Shall we say “Jobs Made for You” on job-pref. page?

Pg. No. 136

·         When a JAM subscriber “Applies Online” by SMS [JAM<Advt. No>Short code], he does not have to enter, even his mobile – number – which gets recognised automatically by the server

·         Someday, it will not be necessary even to type “Advt. No.” Just a simple “SEND” click.

Pg. No. 137

·         In RecruitGuru.com, we learned “educating” HR mgrs. is very difficult / frustrating exp. – so, for the timeline I have decided to leave-out Image-Builder from WWJ / JAM. If JAM clicks, 6/12 months from now, we would prelaunch Recruit Guru & also start Image-Builders in WWJ.

Pg. No. 138

·         When RecruitGuru.com gets launched, we will need a full-day training program for HR mgrs. we will also learn a lot from their feedback / interaction.

Pg. no. 140

·         We cannot use the name of any jobseeker being a subscriber of JAM but an equally-or even more-powerful statement would be the “NUMBER” of JAM subscribers – if that no. become highly respectable / impressive within a short period of launch. Then this no. will tell our story-of being the Market-Leader.

·         After 2/3 months of launch, we have very poor “registration” no’s I am hoping for improvement once MTNL sends out promo SMS next week – announcing FREE job alerts

·         (24-06-05)

·         We have no such money. I can only depend upon testimonials (of respected Authors / HR consultants etc.) and upon attacks write by journalists.

Pg. No. 141

·         As soon as we succeed in signing-up with 3/4 major MSPs, we shall advertise that fact to

1.    Get other MSPs to sign-up

2.    Create confidence / comport amongst jobseekers.

·         We have so far tied-up with Airtel & MTNL (Delhi + Mumbai). But we are still awaiting their roll-out so; there is no point in pressurizing other MSPs. A mere agreement (to provide content) is not a “big deal”! in any case, Nirmit has fixed a meeting with Sandip Das (Dy. MD – Hutch), in week beginning 4th July.

·         (24-06-05)

Pg. No. 149

·         We too plan to give away 50 job alerts “free” during free trial period. That is the only way to convince jobseekers that JAM is a better alternative-as compared to searching jobs on jobsites.

·         Now that Airtel / MTNL have decided to make Job-Alerts FREE, I hope subscribers would want to try-out JAM for a long period.

·         Our spider will need to be capable of downloading job advts. From a wide variety of jobsites and even corporate websites.

·         But the structured database that will emerge from “Job Mine”, will be independent / unified / normalised.

Pg. No. 150

·         This urge to use JAM, could be particularly strong with employed professionals, who don’t feel the need to visit jobsites (for job search) in normal course. They have no need because they are having a job & then searching jobs on jobsites is a tedious process. But, it they can get FREE job-alerts on their mobiles – then why not? At worse, you don’t apply.

·         JAM has to be capable of working equally well on wireless networks of dozens of MSPs & equally well on handsets mfd. By dozens of mfrs. (GSM / CDMA).

Pg. No. 151

·         This could well happen to JAM. Will jobseekers want JAM simply because, it is NOW possible to receive job-alerts on their mobiles AND it is further possible to “apply online” from their mobiles? Can we turn JAM into OCD-obsessive compulsive Disorder?

·         There is never an empty cupboard / cabinet in a house! People will always find things to fill up these!

·         Same with JAM

·         May be this will happen to WWJ too.

·         I am not giving up hope. We must wait till MTNL / Airtel roll-out.

·         (24-06-05)

Pg. No. 152

·         An article in today’s elfin-Express says Wal-Mart has today, 460 terabytes of data on its mainframes!

·         (15-11-04)

·         Abhi

Pg. No. 154

·         For every JAM subscriber, we plan to store, every job-alert ever sent to him-and every “Apply Online” click that he ever made. Then we will mine this data to develop “trends” during various “periods” of his career.

Pg. No. 155

·         Read book “Telecoms.”

Pg. No. 158

·         This is why, on supply-side, we need tie-ups with jobsites (to deliver our main raw material, viz: job-advts.) and no delivery-side, we need to tie-up with as many MSPs – as possible.

·         Plan to do this thru Guru Net (VEE)

·         Delivery / Billing / Collection & even marketing will be done by MSPs

·         We must remain focussed on adding new jobsites & new MSPs & new “features” to JAM.

Pg. No. 159

·         I have plans to harness the collective knowledge / wisdom of a few thousand HR managers, online.

·         In JAM jobseekers are delegating searching & matchmaking tasks to our software’s – also delivering of resume.

·         Who wants to visit dozens of jobsites daily-if this job can be delegated to JAM?

·         JAM offers only 5/ day instead of 500 jobs!

Pg. No. 160

·         JAM does this for jobseekers.

Pg. No. 161

·         Repeat customers

·         People can search for jobs in – newspapers – magazines – jobsites – corporate websites. So WWJ competes against all of these! – not just jobsites

·         Probably not more than 5% of Indian jobseekers have searched for jobs on jobsites. Our target is the other 95% as well! Let us make JAM their first / rewarding experience.

·         They are in small towns where inter net & mobile has to reach.

Pg. No. 162

·         Once a JAM subscriber sends “JAMSUB” SMS, our service will continue without interruption, until subscriber sends an SMS “JAM UNSUB”. He can switch IN & OUT, at will, any time without any human inter-venation-in such a simple way.

Pg. No. 163

·         Read my promo email, “Jobsites Don’t Remember”. The rends/ patterns that we will determine, using “Job Preferences” & “Apply Online” clicks of millions of jobseekers, will help our SPIDER to go out & download job-advts, which are in maxim demand. This is also what Wal-Mart does regularly.

Pg. No. 164

·         There are lakhs of corporates / businesses, and millions of jobseekers. Thru tie-up with MSPs, we hope to reach-out to jobseekers but how do we reach-out to corporates? It is possible only thru Guru Net (VEE). We leave it to partner websites to canvass business from corporates.

·         (24-06-05)

Pg. No. 165

·         I started 3P in April 1990, with Rs. 3000/=!

·         Transfer cheque was it 14-02-1990.

·         I hope I figured out correctly what jobseekers need - & why.

·         This is what RecruitGuru.com should try to give to its corporate clients.

Pg. No. 166

·         JAM subscribers will get the SAME job-alerts, irrespective of who is his mobile-service provider; so changing MSPs does not help a jobseeker.

·         His only alternative is to go back to searching jobs on jobsites!

·         We have to build lots of features.

Pg. No. 167

·         Once JAM starts “recommending” what it considers to be ideal jobs for a subscriber (based on (1) his resume (2) his job-preferences (3) his “Apply Online” click history (4) his Function profile etc. etc., a subscriber may gain confidence in JAM’s “astuteness” and then, he may even let JAM decide & forward his resume without having to view the job-alert & clicking “Apply Online”. JAM will become, subscriber’s Personal Agent / alter Ego / bot.

·         (16-11-04)

Pg. No. 168

·         Thru a note, today, I have asked Abhi, to build a feature in our website, whereby Job-Pref. History & Apply Online History gets compiled for each & every subscriber

·         (16-11-04)

Pg. No. 169

·         Steve Ballmer – CEO – Microsoft, announced in Hyderabad yesterday of creation of the largest – outside of USA – S/W development facility in India & adding 1600 jobs within a year

·         Ballmer also formed a JV with Infosys at an investment of $ 8 million

·         In 2004, this is closer to 60,000!

Pg. No. 170

·         This is what MS-Info. sys JV will do.

·         Right now this is picking up in India. Also “clinical trials” by Indian Companies.

Pg. No. 171

·         At some point of time, this might create create a conflict of interests! After all they are all competitors.

·         LG & Samsung manufacture these phones now.

Pg. No. 172

·         A jobseekers problem is identical – just too many choices!

·         We have yet to take any steps for this.

Pg. No. 173

·         If this happens,

Ø  WWJ / JAM – MSPs (7/8 in India)

Ø  Guru Net (VEE) – Jobsites (I am targeting 100 in India)

·         We would have succeeded in raising “entry barriers” sufficiently.

·         (24-06-05)

·         In 3 yrs. we should be able to surpass these numbers for JAM subscribers.

·         Whereas we must try to get patent for Image-Builder, our defence against any competitor will mainly rest in the SIZE of the dely – network (of MSPs) which we succeed in putting together before the first copycat competitor emerges. We must raise “Entry Barriers”.

Pg. No. 178

·         JAM is delivering jobs posted (on jobsites) during last 24 hours. JAB (Job Ad Broadcasting), will deliver (as SMS) jobs posted by corporates in last 24 minutes! Will JAB make JAM obsolete?

·         DELL has negative working capital. Buy on credit & sell on cash.

·         Our supply chain will consist of jobsites from around the World – so JAM job-pref. form will, someday need “country” choice.

Pg. No. 182

·         This also applies to JAM – since we are getting different suggestions (for deployment) from

·         TATA

·         Airtel

·         MTNL

·         Ariel’s decision for FREE job alerts came about because their billing software had limitation. I think this was a “blessing in disguise”! Now I have succeeded in convincing MTNL to make job alerts FREE. Once they do others will have to follow suit. BSNL, any case does not charge for PUSH alerts.

Pg. No. 184

·         I hope JAM could also become indispensable to jobseekers around the world.

·         As WWJ ties up with mobile-service providers in other countries, we too, would need to locate our servers (offline as well as online) in those countries. This would minimize the risk of breakdown & consequent “Delivery Failure”.

Pg. No. 189

·         In turn got acquired by HP (10 2002)?

Pg. No. 190

·         JAM is founded on this premise. Why should / would a jobseeker deal with so many jobsites, if, he can get same / better “service” from just one?

·         Guru Net (VEE) is an anti-thesis. I have thought of Guru Net because, I now realise that, for a long time to come, a large no. of jobseekers will still want to conduct job-searches on jobsites.

·         (24-06-05)

·         I suppose, over the last 14 years, 3P’s consultants must have acquired a lot of knowledge in the area of “Recruitment” – only some of which, we are using in JAM & Recruit guru.

·         (18-06-04)

Pg. No. 191

·         My job is to convince jobsites that they team-up with WWJ – which will benefit both. Those who do team up will get to deploy our “Guru Ad” software on their sites.

·         JAM needs job-advts. in order to deliver same to jobseekers. For this it must depend on jobsites. By getting many jobsites to join Guru Net (VEE), I am trying to “formalize” this dependency give it a legal framework

Pg. No. 192

·         Larger the co. longer it takes sometimes years!

Pg. No. 195

·         We want to establish – VEE – Virtual Employment Exchange.

·         To be called Guru Net

Pg. No. 196

·         Our strategy is somewhat similar. We are about to launch JAM on TATA / MTNL – Delhi & Airtel network.

·         The first 2 are relatively very small but, when BSNL merges with MTNL, it will be a giant entity. Airtel already is. We intend to follow-up with HUTCH / IDEA / Reliance. Once this happens BPL / Spice etc. will come to us, on their own.

·         Our 160 character job-alerts will be identical, irrespective of source (jobsite).

·         JAM SUB & JAM UNSUB aim to place control in the hands of JAM Subscribers

Pg. No. 197

·         Our (ultimate?) eco system will comprise:

o    MSPs

o    Jobsites

o    Jobseekers

o    Employers

o    ISPs

o    TV Channels

o    Newspapers

o    Cyber Cafes etc.

·         (20-11-04)

·         Our proposal folder to 480 newspapers will go next week.

·         Cybercafé proposal (Double Your Revenue) will go in 6/8 weeks

·         (24-06-05)

Pg. No. 198

·         JAM has same objectives for the jobseekers

·         We need to appreciate that all jobseekers don’t search jobs on jobsites – and therefore happy to switch-over to JAM. Very senior Executives like to be “headhunted” & fresh MBAs will make a list of companies / employers and do not want to work with anyone else.

·         Pg. No. 200

·         I believe Recruit guru team must continuously think-up of ways in which MSPs can make more money! – And jobsites as well!!

·         Guru Net (VEE) will enable jobsites to make much move money.

Pg. No. 202

·         Collaboration between content-providers and mobile-service providers, are at such a stage.

Pg. No. 207

·         Mobile “smart phones” are as good as “handheld computers”. To use these, merely to receive job-alert SMS and to click “SEND” (apply online), would be gross underutilisation of their capabilities. Sooner - than later - jobseekers should be able to track the status of their job-applications on these, mobile devices.

·         Abhi

1.    Jobseeker = Customer

2.    Resume = Package

3.    Employer = Destination

4.    WWJ = UPS

Pg. No. 208

·         We (WWJ) may, one day a million “customers” (jobseekers / JAM subscribers) – asking us to deliver 2 million packages (resumes) every day to 10,000 destinations (employers). What “patterns” would emerge?

·         Without bothering to apply-online, if Senior Executives start getting suitable job-alerts on their mobiles, there is reason to believe that, they would start phoning head-hunters – instead of waiting for head-hunters to phone them! This would change “traditional head hunting” business “on its head”?

·         (22-11-04)

·         ”I am senior” will reverse the roles of Sr. Executives & Head hunters!

·         In next 2 days, I intend uploading page “I am senior”, on WWJ which will do just this!

·         (24-06-05)

Pg. No. 212

·         We would need to share a lot of statistical data (re: JAM) with our mobile service providers – so that each can reach out to potential JAM subscribers & also tell us what “else”, can be delivered to them.

·         We have already sent Password to online ADMIN TOOL to MTNL. This tool provides basic data on daily transactions. But in 3/4 months, we will provide many “analytics” – some even graphically.

·         How soon can we expect JAM to “move” 50% of all the resumes (from jobseekers to employers) in India? May be 2/3 years?

Pg. No. 213

·         When drivers hit a highway, they tend to speed-up – even if not in hurry!

·         “The Age of Instant” may have finally arrived.

·         Pg. No. 223

·         (22-11-04)

·         (24-06-05)
