POSITIONING THE BATTLE FOR YOUR MIND - AL RIES. JACK TROUT

====================================================================================

When I read any book, I scribble my comments / notes in the margins

These reflect my views / opinions about what the author is saying – including my disagreement

Often, my comments are in the nature of telling myself :

Hey ! We should try out this idea in our own business ( Head-hunting / Online Recruitment )

Following are my comments re :

POSITIONING THE BATTLE FOR YOUR MIND - AL RIES. JACK TROUT

=====================================================================================

Pg. No. 4

·         After reading trout’s “Differentiate or Die” on world -wide-Jobs, somewhere I have said but we are not a jobsite but it seems to drive away the jobseekers! Whereas I want them to “register”

Pg. No. 5

·         May be it has never occurred to jobseekers that they can receive job alerts (as  SMS) on their mobile phones hence it is proving difficult to sell this “position” viz: convenience.

Pg. No. 7

·         There are about 5/7 million resumes on Indian jobsites. May be these jobseekers are used to job searching on jobsites and maybe therefore, “their mind is made up” (re: the right method of searching for jobs). But what about 50 million others who have never experienced internet? Can we make up their mind about JAM as the right method?

Pg. No. 8

·         Yesterday SAMSUNG announced a 16 GB chip capable of storing 32 hours of video!

·         Today’s announcement from I & B minister says, by next year DD will offer 100 “free” channels on DTH platform.

Pg. No. 9

·         JAM / RAM

Pg. No. 10

·         How does this benefit you?

Pg. No. 12

·         Takes me between 1 ½ to 2 hour daily just to go thru the headlines of 5/6 newspapers I get.

Pg. No. 13

·         Just one invention that must have cheered up the entire paper mfg. industry!

·         No wonder America is a lawyer’s paradise!

Pg. No. 15

·         No news is good news? Still perseverance is useful.

Pg. No. 16

·         And therefore, at a great risk of getting lost to china / India & other developing, low cost countries.

Pg. No. 18

·         Nicholas Negroponte worked on development of this (bar-code) “being Digital” (1995)

·         There are similar interesting figures in the paradox of choice.

Pg. No. 19

·         Must be happening to children (and adults too), who play video games.

·         WWJ/JAM is based on this premise. From only 3 jobsites (the big ones of course), we are downloading 2500 + job advts posted EVERYDAY! In India alone there are over 500 jobsites (40,000 + World Wide). It is impossible to search jobs on jobsites!

Pg. No. 21

·         Another definition I read is! “Luck is when preparedness meets the opportunity.” Well said

Pg. No. 22

·         Monster & Naukri are both advertising heavily in papers and on TV, both making identical claim “we are 1 Jobsite”

Pg. No. 23

·         There was no point launching either world-wide-jobs or Global Recruiter as yet another jobsite. There are already 500 others! No one would even remember / recall these names. So I decided that the “name” to be imprinted in the minds of jobseekers will be JAM / JAB / RAM / RAB in the minds of HR mgrs.

·         These are easy to remember and associate with what they stand for:

JAM = Job Alert Mobile

JAB = Job Alert Broadcast

RAM = Resume Alert Mobile

RAB = Resume Alert Broadcast

·         Let people forget world-wide-jobs global Recruiter.

Pg. No. 24

·         Monster – Naukri – Jobs ahead are ahead of us in getting their jobs printed in newspapers / magazines. Can we overtake them? I believe we can.

Pg. No. 25

·         We have so far succeeded in teeing-up whit Airtel & MTNL only. But we will keep wooing BSNL / Reliance / Hutch / Idea / BPL etc. they will look at us, only once they see a huge no-of Airtel / MTNL subscribers using JAM.

·         We are far from “critical Mass” and I don’t know where is the elusive” point (Malcolm Glad well). But we will not give-up we will keep experimenting e.g.:

- JAS

- Global Recruiter

- Colleges

- Cybercafés.

·         We have to spread the message.

Pg. No. 26

·         Airtel has promised to send a revised “creative” tomorrow. I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Pg. No. 27

·         We must expect that more JAM will follow.

Pg. No. 28

·         We have no money to advertise so; we are finding different ways to popularise JAM.

·         JAS (Job Advts Summary) is one such way. Free press journal, will start week. We will use this example to “sell” the idea to other newspapers.

Pg. No. 32

·         Our website name is world-wide-jobs but our brand is JAM (Job Alert Mobile). Someday soon, a competitor will come out with Globe-Wide-Jobs, but we have appropriated

·         JAM                   -          JAB                 -          RAM                 -              RAB

·         A glassful of wine                                    God in Hinduism                 God Islam

Pg. No. 34

·         Where jobs come searching for you on your mobile

·         Where you apply online with a single click on your mobile

·         Would & these lines heighten expectations?

Pg. No. 35

·         It may be same whit job seekers. They may not remember beyond 2/3 job sites!

Pg. No. 36

·         JAM (for Job Alert on Mobile) is a “positioning concept” (as opposed to a Job alert on a PC).

Pg. No. 37

·         All jobsites position is “Job Alert on Pc them email” our “Job Alert on Mobile thrn SMS” choice is yours!

·         We do say “World- Wide-Jobs is not a jobsite” but then WWJ is not a product either!

·         can we say,

·         JAM is an SMS-not an email

·         JAM follows you – wherever you go!

Pg. No. 38

·         By positioning WWJ as “not a jobsite” we are trying to avoid direct confrontation whit Monster Naukri etc.

Pg. No. 39

·         For Global Recruiter, Shall we say?

1)    First Network of Jobsites

2)    Only _______ ________

3)    Only Virtual Employment Exchange

4)    The Virtual __________ ___________

Pg. No. 40

·         Where jobs come searching for you on your mobile

·         Where you apply online with a single click on your mobile

·         I have put this on

1)    Homepage of WWJ

2)    Letterhead

3)    Business – card

4)    Envelopes.

Pg. No. 44

·         Something similar now happening to America in Iraq.

Pg. No. 45

·         Like Arjun fighting Bhīma Pitamaha, hiding behind shikhandis (the eunuch). In Global Recruiter or thru GR – we are creating a 100 shikhandis (partner websites). Form behind this façade, we attack Monster / Naukri. We are behind the scene invisible. And hopefully each partner

·         Website will appear insignificant to Monster / Naukri not worth wasting their time. I hope this works.

Pg. No. 48

·         With WWJ not taking off (and since Airtel / MTNL are unwilling to spend big money to promote WWJ), we head to launch Global Recruiter fast. If it clicks, it will solve WWJ’s problem.

Pg No. 51

·         This is what I am trying both in WWJ GR. At this Point it looks one cannot survive without the other.

Pg. No. 53

·         In offering Job Advt. summary (JAS) to newspapers, Monster / Naukri / Job Ahead / Job Street are ahead of us. But because of our “Aggregation” of jobs from several jobsites and our autmatell delivery system, we have a chance to overtake them. We are going to try hard.

Pg. No. 55

·         Both Monster & Naukri are doing this. Monster, after a acquisition of Job Ahead.

·         Pg. No. our “original” concept is JAM (Job Alert Mobile). When global Remitter gets launched,

·         We will reinforce JAM with:

·         JAB (Job Alert Broad cast)

·         RAM (Resume Alert Mobile)

·         RAB (Resume Alert Broad cast).

·         Any competitor who follow us, will need to comment whit even better sounding words which also covey its “positron” relation

·         In a years’ time we will know whether JAM is the “real thing” for mobile owning jobseekers. (16-09-05)

Pg. No. 59

·         When Monster / Naukri take notice of Global Recruiter, what could be their reaction / response?

·         Would they imitate GR and rush in to forming a parallel network of jobsites? That world is hara-kiri! I hope they are smart enough not to commit suicide.

Pg. No. 62

·         A question of making yourself obsolete before your competitor does!

Pg. No. 66

·         Monster a acquired Jobs Ahead. Yahoo India is rumoured to a acquire Naukri. Both, Monster & yahoo are USA Co Whereas Jobs Ahead & Naukri are Indian companies.

·         Is this and a fluid Situation?

·         Can some subtle (fear) argument be used to rally rest of jobsites around Global Recruiter?

Pg. No. 67

·         WI that exception the revenue model of all jobsites is “corpo subscnptions” far job post / resume search.

·         In WWJ, we are targeting job seekers & their micro payments, which, I believe, will someday run into millions.

·         Again in Global Recruiter, we are planning to unite network a whole lot of placement Agencies who, together, contribute nearly 70% of all online job advts. If successful in harnessing these job advts, GR will fuel the growth of WWJ. Along shot may be but a “hole” nonetheless! (17-09-05)

·         Read my today’s note “the battle plan for Global Recruiter”

·         Can we simply say :

·         “Jobs on the Go”

·         “Jobs - wherever you go”

Pg. No. 68

·         Will “Jobs on the Go”, make us “pre-empt” the “mobility” position? OR “ JAM : the Art of killing Jobs arch”

Pg. no. 69

·         In a note to Abhi today, I have asked him to insert below Global Recruiter,

·         The only ONE Online Networked Exchange.

·         Would be partner jobsites must feel / believe that there is no other network.

Pg. No. 74

·         This happened when I was in USA between (1956-58)

Pg. No. 75

·         For city based jobseekers whit knowledge of various jobsites, perhaps “jobs arch” process is strongly connected whit a PC / Internet connection; on a 15 screen. It is going to be difficult to convince them to give up a PC and expect to search job on a __ X __ screen. Could his reaction be?

·         How can you search job on such a small screen? Impossible! But, ultimately lack – of – time and convenience of mobile phone shall convince.

·         There should be no search pre conceived notion, with small town jobseekers who have never visited a jobsite on PC.

·         I hope Global Recruiter world gradually move, city jobseekers from PC to mobile based job searching.

Pg. No. 78

·         JAM the Art of killing Job search?

·         (Job search being an existing concept)

Pg. No. 79

·         Can Global Recruiter “burst” the monster / Naukri bubble?

·         And syrs down the lane will WWJ burst “Global Recruiter” bubble?

·         Our homepage (WWJ) says that (without mentioning any jobsite by name). so does 32 write ups on “MISSION” page.

Pg. No. 80

·         Job search is dead: Long live JAM ( Job Alert on Mobile)

Pg. No. 88

·         JAM alerts are tailor made for each job seeker without slowing down the service

Pg. No. 89

·         We hammed our “product” (rather a “service”), JAM (job Alert Mobile). In Global Recruiter, this will be followed by

·         JAB = Job Alert Broadcast

·         RAM = Resume Alert Mobile

·         RAB = Resume Alert Broadcast. And we have already started emailing daily Job Advt. summary to 480 newspapers and we call it JAS.

Pg. No. 90

·         JAM is that “close” but I cannot imagine a future competitor world what to use it.

·         JAM does: getting a Job Alert on Mobile

·         I have to find enough money to register JAM / JAB / RAM / RAB / JAS etc. (if such registering is possible)

Pg. No. 91

·         Shall we keep competitors out of JAM Territory?

·         We can say this for JAM too.

Pg. No. 92

·         Tomorrow a competitor could come out whit JIM = Job interview on Nobile.

Pg. No. 93

·         Both, world-Wide-Jobs and Global Recruiter are simple to remember and easy to associate whit “Jobs / Recruitment”.

Pg. No. 94

·         e.g.: yahoo / Google / e Bay / Monster / Skype are good examples. First with great products / services.

·         Bobabitify of occurrence based on frequency distribution

Pg. No. 95

·         URL “Worlswidejobs” was already taken – so we selected “world-Wide-Jobs”. I think this is easier to read and grasp. Also the hyphen – create the feeling go “widens”. Similarly Global Recruter.com was not available – so we chose Global Recruiter. Net Again I feel this is a better choice, since we call GR, “the only one:

·         Online Networked Exchange”

Pg. No. 96

·         Whorls-Wide-Jobs is not a jobsite

Pg. No. 97

·         What can be the “battle cay” for Global Recruiter? It certainly cannot be “Online Networked Exchange” (the only ONE). Which is ok on homepage but not as a battle cry! In USA, it could have been “Monster – Killer” our goal is to wean – away recruitment managers who currents patronise Monster / Naukri. Our battle cry must make SENSE to them appeal to them. Global Recruiter – Simplifying Recruitment? Expediting Recruitment? The ultimate Recruiter? Recruiters Nirvana? Recruitment Solutions? The Recruitment Endgame? Jobseekers Unlimited? Job searches unlimited?

Pg. No. 99

·         I eyepiece, last week, these too, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy! (18-09-05)

·         Fortunately, both World-Wide Jobs Global Recruiter have international flavour! We chose these carefully because of our intentions to spread beyond India.

·         And one year from now, we will prelaunch RecruitGuru.com (Even “Guru” is now known worldwide)

Pg. No. 100

·         But south west Airlines is a roaring success! Never missed profit or dividend for last 20 years in a row! The only American Airline with such record.

Pg. No. 104

·         World-Wide-Jobs       Jobs             Generics

·         Global Recruiter        Recruit

·         Brands.

·         Stan vac – Esso – Exxon

Pg. No. 105

·         I have visited their plant.

Pg. No. 106

·         To Recruitment Managers, what benefit (of using) could Global Recruiter Connote? lill GR (name) Convey to them that (by using it), they can source / the world ?

·         I suppose a jobseeker would expect to find jobs from all over the world, on

·         World-Wide-Jobs

·         The name implies as much which is our goal by similar reasoning, Global Recruiter world imply that Recruiters from around the globe, visit this website in search of resumes.

Pg. No. 108

·         Unlikely to happen to World-Wide-Jobs = WWJ Global Recruiter  = GR But, JAM is a likely candidate

Pg. No. 124

·         “World-Wide-Jobs” for Job Alerts on Mobile (Single Product)

·         “Global Recruiter” for Job Post / Job search

·         Resume post / Resume Search (a typical jobsite).

Pg. No. 125

·         Recruit Guru is a small Co. and JAM is its well defined position viz:

·         Delivering Job Alerts on Mobile will this make Monster / Naukri to ignore it?

Pg. No. 126

·         Our homepage of World-Wide-Jobs, starts with For Whom? …………………………… We state clearly whom we serve – who can be our client. Not everybody.

Pg. No. 128

·         Somewhere I remember having written “we are against job search”

·         I think in one of those 32 wire-ups on MISSION page of would –wide jobs And I remember by jack it was inspired by jack trout’s “Differentiate or Die”

Pg. No. 129

·         Today jobsites do deliver job alert as email [on pc] but

·         Jam delivers job alert as SMS con mobiles could we look forward to a time when there is only ONE way of delivering job-alerts and that is on mobile ?Can Jam, someday and that is on Mobil? Can JAM someday become synonymous with job alert? Jam =job alert-period we will try +succeed too.18/09/2005.

Pg. No. 130

·         Or “A job-alert that follows you wherever you go “that is JAM [the hook]

·         The “whole “that we are trying to fill thru JAM is “immobility “associated with traditional conventional jobsearehing on jobsite requiring a pol internet/ a tan be/chair.

Pg. No. 136

·         In India, at one time,

·         CADBURY       STOOD FOR CHOCOLETS

·         POLSON        STOOD FOR BATTER

·         DALDA          STOOD FOR HYDROGENCTED OIL

·         GLUCO          STOOD FOR BISCUITS

Pg. No. 160

·         For this reason, I plan to come out whit an Advertiser Response Monitor (ARM) which will “rank” the job advertisers according to their “responsiveness” received. ARM will use feedback from job applicants to calculate the “rank”.

·         The visible face of Greyhound

Pg. No. 164

·         At many places, I have said, “our objective is to take job related info to jobseekers in remotest corners of India” (19-09-05)

Pg. No. 187

·         Email will make much of this volume disappear soon though not all.

Pg. No. 195

·         Global Recruiter VS Monster?

Pg. No. 208

·         Like we are the Guru of Recruitment – the Recruit Guru!

·         We plan to launch Global Recruiter in next 3 weeks, whit the minimum features needed to attract dozens of placement agencies to sing-up.

·         We will add many more features as time goes.

Pg. No. 216

·         We are definitely going against the tide, when we say:

·         JAM will kill job search

·         RAM will kill resume search

·         I am waiting for JAM to pick-up. (23-09-05)

Pg. No. 219

·         Who are our prospects? For WWJ, these are jobseekers but in case to global Recruiter, these are jobseekers as well as Recruiters.

Pg. No. 220

·         Neither WWJ nor GR owns any position (to start with) in the minds of prospects. As of now, both, WWJ & GR are prospects. GR is not even launched. So, we do not have to change / modify any “existing” position.

·         What is already there?

·         “Job search” in the minds of jobseekers

·         “Resume Search” in the minds of Recruitment managers.

·         Existing jobsites have struggled for many (3/7) years, to create these “positions” in the minds of jobseekers & Recruitment Managers. These are well entrench had positions.

Pg. No. 221

·         Both, Monster & Naukri are fighting it out for #1 Jobsite position. By say, we are NOT a jobsite, I want to avoid direct confrontation.

·         Hopefully next week, the first advt. of Airtel will come out, carrying in left hand top corner, the message:

·         JAM is Job Alert on Mobile. What is left unsaid is that we “own” JAM! At the bottom of the visual / image will be a message:

·         Searching for Job? Don’t! [Let job come scorching for you or get searched!]

Pg. No. 222

·         “keyword” box in both

·         Job Posting

·         Resume Posting

Pg. No. 223

·         Was this in 1981 or 2001? Any fist for 2005?

·         We have no money to spend to establish / pre-empt the position we must depend upon

·         Mobile Service Providers

·         Newspapers (Job Advt. summary)

·         TV

·         Colleges / cyber cafes etc.

·         Cable TV

Pg. No. 224

·         To begin with, we confine ourselves to India.

·         As for as RAM is conceded, we are toying whit the idea of introducing this feature, only for those HR mgrs. in Mumbai who have an Airtel connection If this clicks, we will push to other circles (Airtel) of India Then to other MPs.

Pg. No. 225

·         JAM is a basic strategy RAM would “dramatize” this concept (of delivery over mobile)

·         JAM is on WWJ

·         RAM is on GR Separate platforms & separate “audience”

Pg. No. 226

·         JAM is Job Alert on Mobile

·         We are in this category

Pg. No. 230

·         Every time a person reads “JAM”, will he associate it with a SMS on Mobile?

Pg. No. 231

·         So, spread of JAM, may well depend upon, how many people share their “Jamming” experience with others and how often.

·         JAM (in Hindi) is a glass of wine. Will jobseekers imagine drinking a glass of wine when reading a JAM message on their mobile? Will that experience arouse emotion of “exhilaration”? Will ready feel “inebriated” / lighter? Worry free? High? Relaxed? Devil-may-care?

Pg. No. 233

·         Remaining of cussed.

Pg. No. 234

·         What “underling” (long term) can help JAM succeed?

·         Population (of Jobseekers) is growing rapidly

·         BUT

·         Jobs are NOT growing at the same pace

·         RESULTING IN

·         Many more jobseekers, chasing fewer jobs

·         Jobs are not evenly distributed (geographically) across the globe / even across a country.

·         Nor, are jobseekers evenly distributed across Nations

·         More & more information based jobs will get done remotely (over Internet)

·         Such jobs will move to low-cost countries

·         Media are proliferating

·         Mobiles will outsell PC 1021. Warless networks will reign supreme.

·         Jobseekers have less time and even lesser patience to search jobs

·         Jobholders want to accelerate “up word mobility” (more salary / higher posts).

·         (24-09-05)

Pg. No. 235

·         Somewhere I read “luck is when preparedness meets opportunity” (Do Co Mo?)

·         We have no money!

Pg. No. 236

·         It is humanly impossible to search thru 250,000 job-advts posted on 500 jobsites-each waiting to be discovered!

·         JAM is Job Alert on Mobile

Pg. No. 238

·         Over a period of time, we will modify (both on WWJ and on GR),

·         “Job Post” Form

·         “Resume Post” Form

·         There will be a unique combination (of these forms) for each of the following categories of jobseekers:

·         Professionally Qualified

·         IT / ITES

·         Non-IT

·         Vocationally Qualified

·         Factory workers

·         Office workers

·         Retail / Trading Staff

·         Health care Tenicians etc. etc.

·         Retired professionals

·         Fresh Graduates

·         (Apprentice / Trainees)

·         Remote Workers

·         Housewives

·         Free lance

·         Self employed

·         Temps (Temporaries)

Pg. No. 239

·         May be this is what Airtel want to do in respect of JAM

·         If JAM catches on in India, we could easily extend it to Pakistan / Sri Lanka / Nepal / Bangladesh / Singapore / Malaysia etc.

Pg. No. 243

·         (24-09-05)
