THE LONGER LONG TAIL - CHRIS ANDERSON

====================================================================================

When I read any book, I scribble my comments / notes in the margins

These reflect my views / opinions about what the author is saying – including my disagreement

Often, my comments are in the nature of telling myself :

Hey ! We should try out this idea in our own business ( Head-hunting / Online Recruitment )

Following are my comments re :

==================================================================================

Pg. No. 5

·         Job Ads appearing in Newspapers are like “broadcast”. Matched job ads appearing on mobile thru JAM icon will be the opposite. Personalized.

·         Newspaper Ads have limited “reach” whereas internet & mobiles have worldwide reach.

Pg. No. 11

·         What are the “obstacles” between a jobseeker and job-advt info? PC and Internet. With JAM icon, being developed by HP Labs, I hope to remove these by next month.

·         Hopefully, JAM icon will achieve this

Pg. No. 16

·         For success of JAM widget, this will be the key!

·         JAM is all about match-making. Widget is about eliminating bottlenecks.

Pg. No. 28

·         What will be the “cost” of connecting to a “matching” job-advt, for a user of smart phone, using widget? Perhaps, mobile service provider will charge the cost of 1 SMS. And another SMS for tapping on [APPLY] button.

·         Most likely, phone-user won’t even realize this cost!

·         HP Labs have promised widget by month-end and I hope to launch this “App” on Oct. 06.

Pg. No. 42

·         Products

·         Delivery Mechanism

·         The most popular chain when I was in USA in 1956-58

Pg. No. 43

·         As of today, we are “offering” 347,000 job-advts (to be searched & applied) on our site – and offer FREE emailing resumes to those advertisers – when a candidate “Applies”

·         I just drafted a pase “Internet Kiosk” & sent to Shuklendu & Revathi

Pg. No. 44

·         Devices

·         Delivery media

·         Now situation is reversing once again with arrival of online shopping. Less & Less people going to stores & more buying online.

·         web sites

Pg. No. 45

·         In Customize Resume, we are offering “One stop shopping” by aggregating jobs from 3 job-portals. In course of time, we will add some more.

·         Newly developed widget (My Jobs) by HP-Labs is also self-service.

Pg. No. 46

·         When we step-up our “Job Aggregation” efforts (thru RSS feeds), we will offer jobs from all over the world – and request HP Labs to modify widgets that will work from anywhere in the world.

Pg. No. 47

·         As compared to searching for jobs on job portals & applying ON-LINE, widget offer “much more convenience”.

Pg. No. 48

·         I have no doubf that [My Jobs] widget will be a “Quantum Jump” in customer experience. We should know by this month end.

Pg. No. 49

·         Print Newspapers are like physical “superstores”. 10 page [ASCENT] – solely devoted to job-advts, can, at most, carry 1000 advts!

·         Aggregation of [ONLINE] databases of books. & as of last week, offering downloads on its own e-book reader [Amazon Fire] priced at $ 199= with basic model at $ 97=

·         And, these days, most e-book readers, enable making such comments inmargins! It is only a matter of time before I buy one!

Pg. No. 50

·         HP Labs`s widgets will provide to jobseekers, their “smartest way” (as yet) to find pefefectly matching job-advts AND in shortest possible time. Before long, these could be displayed on ANY screen-inclnding TV screen.

Pg. No. 52

·         In case of job-related data (on job portals), what was this “bottleneck of distribution”? it was poor penetration of PC / Internet into small towns / villages (only 5.5% of India’s people use internet). This has created a “Digital Divide”.

·         Hopefully HP Labs’ widget will remore this bottleneck and bridge this “divide”, since, as of last month (Sept. 2011), there are 840 million mobile phones in India – although very few are smart phones. But, in 3/5 years, every user will have a smart phone.

·         In acsense of widgets, it was not possible to create this “Demand” for jobs. Hopefully, widget will generate the demand. (Solution of a problem?)

Pg. No. 53

·         Online job searches do “cost” – by way of investment in PC / broadband or spending Rs. 15/ hr at Cybercafe.

·         Widget will reduce this cost to a small fraction.

·         Widget + Mobile Phone will be a way.

·         Matched job alerts

Pg. No. 54

·         In India, such a tool is a mobile phone / 840 million and growing @ 10 / 15 million / month.

·         As against this, perhaps no more that 6% of population has access to PC / Internet.

·         For jobs, there are – thousands of job sites

·         No. of job advts

Pg. No. 55

·         Internet-based websites (job portals), can be accessed thru:

·         PC

·         Mobile Phones

·         May be there are TEN times as many mobile phones as there are PC’s

·         In the years to come, MOBILES (-and TV?) will be “Devices of Choice” for millions.

·         Our website aggregating job ads

Pg. No. 56

·         If we have only (1) candidate with exp. In “Deep Sea Diving” and only (1) job advt (from Reliance) for a “Deep Sea Diver”, our S/W will match the two & deliver that Advt thru widget. A true niche!) cost? No more than 10,000 CA’s searching 100,000 jobs for “Finance Manager” – the (HIT)!

·         Price of an SMS on touch-screen.

Pg. No. 57

·         Today, posting job advts on jobportals (content creation) is restricted to a few thousand recruiters having PC / Internet. What would happen if we “enable” a million shop keepers to post their need for “Counter a Hendant” using their smart phone? And enable 10 million housewives to upload job advt for “House Maid”, using their smart phones? And get widget to deliver those jobs to 10 million House Maids on their phones?

·         I mean “Classified Ads” posted thru “droplists” appearing on Mobile Screens.

·         We are.

Pg. No. 61

·         For us, this will be:- how many visitors are “ONLINE” on our site, at any given point of time?

Pg. No. 63

·         Rural jobseekers with mobiles

·         Widgets

·         City – based jobseekers with PC / Broad-band

Pg. No. 71

·         This what I want to do (but not got cround as yet) with “Weightagess” assingned to each “Keyword” in the resumes – which add up to the “Raw Score” of that resume. With arrival of each fresh resume, weightage to change dynamically. It is fairly simple no rocket science.

·         I tried this in IndiaRecruiter – did not catch-up.

Pg. No. 73

·         Even if not all job alerts perfectly match, the user’s resume, I hope they will, still agree on one thing,

·         Viz:- whil discussing widgets.

·         If posting jobs on our website, can be made VERY SIMPLE / EASY, using “droplists” viewable on Smartphones, then, l am sure “No of jobs” would rise from 340, 000 to millions. That is our HOLY GRAIL.

Pg. No. 74

·         Nearly all of my “Comments / Reolies” on Websites, mention the “source” of my info – mostly print media.

·         If you type [Hemen Parekh] in Google, you may get 80000 links. That could be the reason why our website gets high rank on search Terms, “Job Avchive” or “Jobs Archive” or “Job Alerts on Mobile”

·         Free download of widgets, carry Site On Mobile logo.

Pg. No. 75

·         For “Resume Rater” tool free download, on IndiaRecruiter.net, I wrote: [“Copy Right? Hell, No!”] May be after reading FIRST EDITION of this book! 4/5 yrs back.

Pg. No. 85

·         May be I too, was “ahead of times”, when I launched World-Wide-Jobs.com, some 7 years back, offering PUSH job-alerts on mobiles, and facility to “Apply Online” against any clert, directly from mobile. But I was totally dependent on BSNL / MTNL / AirTel & Reliance (with whom I had revenue – sharing agreements) to promote JAM – which, they never did! But, hopefully, with HP Labs widgets, this time, we may turn out to be on time.

Pg. No. 86

·         We launched 3pjobs.com on 14 Nov. 1997 – with a Shopping Basket feature too.

·         Interestingly Amazon lists 2 of my 30 yr old “Reports” (New Edu. Policy) as “out of print” book! Where did they get these?

Pg. No. 87

·         Our “Jobs Archive” page is somewhat similar to “used book” store. Expired (out of print) job advts archived by (1) Designation (2) Co. Name. 10 years from now, this will become a useful place for Research

·         We need to aggregate jobs from thousands of job-portals. Then no one can beat us. Like Google News invented by Bharat Krishna – chief scientific officer of Google, did, in his 20% spare time projeet.

Pg. No. 88

·         Meg Whitman, ex-CEO of eBay, just took over as CEO of HP.

·         Sofar, Customize Resume, entirely, depends on jobs aggregated from 3 jobs portals. This is dangerous dependence!

·         We plan to give FREE job – alerts thru widgets – which can reach any smart phone anywhere in India. – Someday, anywhere in the world.

Pg. No. 91

·         At our “Job Search by Job Title” page, we have more than 2 million job advts! we have uploaded these, with the ONLY purpose of getting SPIDERS to craw and index each! Helps improve Google results rank!

·         Widgets will enable us to become one.

Pg. No. 93

·         In relation to “Job Advts” & “Resumes” I had conceptualized such a project in GlobalRecruiter.net IndiaRecruiter.net, was created as a “Partner Website”, demonstrate this concept. Ahead of time!!

Pg. No. 94

·         No matter which job-portal, “Resumes” & “Job Advts” are always “digital”. Key (to success) lies in “aggregating” these & making these searchable from our website.

·         How many people – and from where – will download widgest and how many of them, may use it simultaneously? We don’t need to worry!

Pg. No. 97

·         And, YouTube videos-now approaching billion-deliverd [FREE] on tablets & Smart Phones, even while you are on more. Widget will do the same for jobs!

·         Today paper talk of a $ 35/= Tablet, to be launched in India, tomorrow. Mfd by one Mr. Tuli (Indian / Canadian). That is subdizedrate for collegs students. Dec. general sate @ $ 60/= Android + wifi + Browser.

Pg. No. 98

·         Reason, I talk about My App Share link on webpages and promo email.

Pg. No. 99

·         In our case, word-of-mouth buzz, will start only if the widget experience is absolutely FANTASTIC. If it is, nothing can stop it.

·         This is my rationale behind naming “Mobile Internet Kiosk” to one new page I wrote yesterday.

Pg. No. 106

·         I just sent an email to Revathi / Shuklendu re: display of “Already Applied / To be Applied” job – alerts, thru widget. If we can pull this off, I believe viral Buzz may start

·         Tomarrow will be 1st Anni versavy of SMS based JAM

·         Today, customizeResume’s rank is [2], whreas 3pconsultants.co.in rank is [4]

Pg. No. 107

·         Our (max) 50, jobalerts are nothing more than “aur Recommended” jobs to each candidate. Saves him time to search thru 347,000 (as of today). I have requested Shuklendu to figure-out (thru S/W), how many jobseekers will see [ONE] alert, how many will get [TWO] alerts – and soforth. Will this distribution look like ____________?

·         We must know before we launch widgets.

·         This is crucial in our case.

Pg. No. 108

·         Can we get them to talk about widget?

·         We match & present 50 jobs to each candidate, out of 347000 jobs in our database.

Pg. No. 109

·         Matched jobs

·         On “Job Suggest” page we have implemented only [stage1] algorithm. [stage2] will be mindboggling.

Pg. No. 110

·         Widgets are all about presenting “Recommended” jobs to candidates-fast-without PC - on the move.

·         Widget does same thing.

Pg. No. 113

·         Our widget will be compared with job alert methods offered by other jobportals.

Pg. No. 115

·         What is the use, if an online jobsearch fetches 543 jobs? Who has time to go thru?

·         Read book “Paradox of choices”.

Pg. No. 116

·         Exactly what widget will do!

Pg. No. 119

·         So, we need 3 million job advts online (instead of 347000) and a much superior “Matching” software to be able to find at least a few good matches for 4.7 million resumes we have online.

Pg. No. 121

·         Even as we sit here and prepare for launch of widget, we have no way of knowing that someone somewhere, right now, working on something that will maks widget obsolete even before it is launched.

Pg. No. 122

·         We need “Self-learning” matching algorithms. It is fairly simple. Just compile comprehensive history of all job advts applied by each candidate then parse / index keywords in all those advts then arrange in descending order then match top few with his resume Bingo!

Pg. No. 123

·         When we capture ALL job advts ever applied for, by a jobseeker, we simply capturing his “preferences” / his “likes”. So we know what jobs to recommend to him in future. Our insight.

·         Our job alerts

Pg. No. 125

·         Just heard on CNN that Steve Jobs passed away. Only, as late as 25th Sept. I made remark on “Steve Jobs Way”, whether, [JOBS] widget will become a success; if so, I planned to write to him, how I was inspired by him. I also wondered whether he would be alive till then!

Pg. No. 126

·         This is why, I want to stove all job advts applied by a candidate, parse & index all keywords-then arrange in descending orde of frequency of Dcourrena

·         “asymptotic” curve

Pg. No. 127

·         I have requested Shuklendu to find & plot, the “Frequency Distribution” of “No. of job alerts” Vs. “No. of candidates” in our database – before we launch widget. For success of widget, we must know this (distribution) in advance AND if it comes out “skewed”, change our “matching” algorithm to make it “Normal / Binomial”.

·         Some 40 years back, I used this technique to forecast “unitassembly time” for L & T starters as volumes ramp-up.

Pg. No. 128

·         Since there are many (times) more “Smart Phone” owners in BIG metros, it is possible that widget may become a big HIT there; but what about small touns?

Pg. No. 129

·         “Carrying Capacity” (for widgets) is concentrated in few big cities. I just sent email to Shuklendu / Revathi, inquiring whether AKASH TABLET (just launched & costing Rs. 2200) will support our widgets. If YES, that opens up a totally new horizon!

·         Govt. will subsidize 50% & make available AKASH, to college / school students for Rs. 1100/= only – that is cheaper than any smart phone!

Pg. No. 130

·         This was written 4 years ago! Look at YouTub today with-maybe-a BILLION videos! And accelerating! And watched on iPad!

Pg. No. 136

·         Nearly double.

Pg. No. 137

·         Searching (-really “receiving”) and applying, for jobs, using widget, will certainly require far less time and less cost as well-as compared to PC.

·         For generation of 2011, it is the Mobile Screen on the “front-ground” of their lives!

Pg. No. 138

·         What widget will do: compressing reading of 20/30 job advts rather than open / read 300, to find those 20!

·         Touching My Jobs widget may cost SMS charges-but most users may not realize. Again, touching 2 line briet description, to view FULL job-advt: will that cost SMS charges? Even if it does, will users realize it?

Pg. No. 142

·         For some time now, a few jobportals have been offering SMS-based job alerts. Will widget, a touch-based job alert get more users? Because it is NEW

·         HP is famous.

·         It could be that widget usage keeps rising over time – till something better arrives on the scene.

·         As per Google Analytics, our site has hardly any incoming links-though Alexa counts 156.

Pg. No. 143

·         3pconsultants.co.in (3pjobs.com) has a pagerank of 4, against only (2) for CustomizeResume.

·         3P website is 14 years old / Customize is 2 yr old.

Pg. No. 144

·         Read “Micro Cosm” – book by George Gilder

Pg. No. 145

·         Will users of widgets, view more jobs and apply against more jobs, simply because this is so EASY do-and-because job-alerts keep coming in and less stream? Hoping that the more they “Apply” the better chance of getting a job? Knowing that many of those “Applies” will go waste?

Pg. No. 146

·         How will “Jobs for All” widget, installed on ONE smartphone in a small town, alter the lives of many jobseekers, who did not even “Know” of the existence of suitable jobs in bigger towns? How will getting resumes of far-flung people, affect the Recruiters? Will widget promote more migration to cities? Will abundant availability of candidates, push down “salary-costs”? Will there be much more “outsourcing” to smaller towns? Wait & watch.

Pg. No. 147

·         This (wanting to do things to gether), could promote [“Jobs for All”] widget amongst a group of friends. There is a danger that, despite the faet that all friends have smartphones, they may all go for [“Job for All”] widget; then enter mobile no’s of friends (who have registered on our site), just to SEE, what kind of job-alerts are their friends getting! This could even lead to mischief (amongst friends) wherein, (A) logs in as (B), then “Applies” against all job alerts of (B)! when (B) tries to access his job-alerts using [My Jobs] widget, he finds all job-alerts under “Already Applied” list!

·         I am afraid, we can’t help it! We must find a solution. Just sent email to Shuklendu / Revathi

·         About 15% now.

Pg. No. 148

·         We offer this by aggregating jobs from 3 sites.

Pg. No. 170

·         We have in our library.

Pg. No. 171

·         It is same when you conduct jobsearch on a job portal. You are presented with hundreds of job-advt, -matching your search criteria. This is why we limit (max) 50 jobs in widget.

·         Those are jobs “Recommended” by us.

·         But we keep “recommending” NEW jobs, day-of ter-day

Pg. No. 172

·         Job alerts do this.

Pg. No. 173

·         Some job-portals offer this feature: Jobseekers who saw / applied this job, also saw / applied following jobs: __________ / _________ / _________ / In online jobsearch we show, against each job advt “Applied count”. May be, someday we will show this “count” in widgets too.

Pg. No. 174

·         No doubt some jobseekers are very particular re: the type of jobs they want – but a great majority of the 47 lakh on our website are not much bothered about “choice”. They are desperate to have their resumes delivered to as many employers as possible, and as fast as possible-what widget will enable them to do.

Pg. No. 175

·         “Walkman” was an example of a “device” that created a “need”! – need to listen to music on-the-go.

·         A need which was non-existence before its arrival.

Pg. No. 176

·         Not only online job search takes time, you also need PC / broadband. These are obstacles / hurdles in the way. Widget will make jobs available “right now” Instant Gratification

Pg. No. 190

·         Technologies (and especially mobile phones) are making us, their “Slaves”, - forcing us to (mindlessly) keep doing things – things we never “needed to do” earlier. These are “Solutions” in search of “problems”

·         Just because, it will be extremely easy to find & apply jobs thru widgets, will people keep applying even when thay are not in a need for a “Job – Change”? Maybe. But widgets will be a great boon to people bodly needing job.

Pg. No. 192

·         I hope to be able to launch both widgets (“My Jobs” and “Jobs for All”) on [15 Oct. 2011] (Sankasht Chaturthi / Karva Choth) – if HP Labs-India, complete modification / testing. [08 Oct. 11]

·         As of now, 48 hours worth-watching of videos are uploaded on YouTube, EVERY MINUTE!

Pg. No. 201

·         We are aggregating jobs from 3 big portals – Naukri / Timesjobs / Clickjobs. Many may be doplicates. In course of time, we must find a way to get RSS feeds from many smaller jobportals.

·         This was 4 yrs ago!

Pg. No. 202

·         Jobportals are same. employers post jobs – and candidates post their Resumes. We do not create any content. We only faci lstate “searching”.

·         In our case – Industry / Function / Edu / City

Pg. No. 203

·         Sure, in course of time, we can get many more candidates to “advertise their services” (post their resumes) but breakthrough can only come when we can get 4 million employers to post their “Job Advt”.

Pg. No. 210

·         I am sure there are millions of small businesses (eg: retail stores / shops of all kinds etc.), who need to hire 1 or 2 persons each year (even as replacements). They cannot afford “Subscription” of Naukri / Monster / Timesjobs. They don’t even have a ccess to PC / Internet. We must find a way to enable them to post job advts on our site, using their mobile phones.

Pg. No. 211

·         Aneree reached Dubai, on her way to York.

·         There will be very little cost – and great convenice, if recruiters can post job advts using a mobile. I believe ClickIndia.com has done this. All they (Recruiters) will need to do is use PC / Internet ONCE, to register on our website, giving full details.

Pg. No. 213

·         About 2 yrs ago, I tried to register for Ad Sense, but got rejected! – No reason. We will try again when traffic build-up again.

Pg. No. 214

·         Which shop will place Ad in a newspaper for its need of a “Counter Salesman”? At most, it will paste a notice in the window: “Require Counter Salesman. Inquire inside” now suppose he can post these few words on our site using his mobile? Will he get motivated to do so? I think, he will.

Pg. No. 215

·         We, too, are “Advt Aggregator” – riche of “jpb-advt”

·         $ 29.3 billian in 2010

·         $ 23.6 billian in 2009

Pg. No. 117

·         Aggregate

·         “matching” / “alerting”

·         Indirectly, our “Applied Count” colume in jobsearches

Pg. No. 118

·         Max 50 job alerts, visible on smartphone thru widget, “simplifies” a candidate’s jobsearch. And because, he can see / apply without deperding on PC / Internet, he will be motivated to “Explore”.

·         Apart from expanding no. of jobportals from where to get job RSS feeds, we need to find a clever method to “Aggregate” millions of “Resumes” as well. I plan to do this by making “Resume Parser” tool, freely downloadable from our website. Parsed resumes will get uploaded in our database, - automatically

·         I expect thousands of Recruters, to download “Resume Parser” & start parsing millions of text resumes lying on their harddisks.

Pg. No. 219

·         Now close to 500 million, with 30 million online, at any given pcint of time.

Pg. No. 220

·         This could well happen in our case as well, if

·         We manage to “aggregate” jobs from around the world

·         Widget can work on smartphone, around the world

·         If, jobseekers from around the world can get job alerts thru widgets and can “apply”, then they will not hesitate to register on our site.

·         Will, a few job alerts on widget represent a Micro-Chunk?

Pg. No. 221

·         All airlines started doing this some 5 yrs ago.

Pg. No. 222

·         We have explained our “Recommendation System” in “Job Suggest” page.

Pg. No. 235

·         Alexa shows our site has 156 in coming links.

Pg. No. 237

·         Some 3 months back, Google Web Analytics for our site, showed more than 100,000 in coming links – then, all of a sudden, it dropped to 22!

Pg. No. 238

·         I do the same!

Pg. No. 249

·         Available in our library – with my 4 yr old comments in margins.

Pg. No. 254

·         Yesterday, Google announced, it will make downloading possible, of 1000 full length feature films, for £ 2.5 each. Apparently Google is trying to replicate iTune. Instead of “tracks” it is aggregating “movies”. I suppose it has sold this idea to movie – studios, obviously in a revenur-sharing arrangement. So, no PIRACY! Everything LEGAL – and a WIN / WIN situation for both. What next? Android based Google TV to view? I don’t think, Google will copy iTune in this aspect. It will allow you to view on any device.
