THE FORTUNE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PYRAMID - C.K. PRAHALAD

====================================================================================

When I read any book, I scribble my comments / notes in the margins

These reflect my views / opinions about what the author is saying – including my disagreement

Often, my comments are in the nature of telling myself :

Hey ! We should try out this idea in our own business ( Head-hunting / Online Recruitment )

Following are my comments re :

==================================================================================

Page no = 02

·         As of day, there are 2.92 million internet connections in India but  nearly  56 million mobile  phones, Hence WWJ’s delivery medium ( viz: mobile’s ) seems better suited for delivering job- alerts to far flung  to wins where  BOP Consumers live,

Page no = 05

·         JAM will expose middle class Indian professionals to job- opportunities all over the world 5 years from now; It should get easier for such people to get jobs abroad,

Page no = 06

·         Thru innovation of jam, we hope to reach out to those 44 million “unemployed” who are registered with Q 40 + employment exchanges.

Page no = 12

·         This argument is perhaps, also valid in cash of internet access to the poor. It is obvious that Indian ISP is not making any effort to rope- in- poor as “subscribers” (again, a question of purchasing power) Bobbly purchasing power also keeps a poor away from a g cybercast which charges RS- 15/25 PER hour something no poor earn afford is this a pointer to poor opting to receive FREE job alert Sms on their cheap mobile services? Many msp are now, offering INWMINIG calls free.

Page no = 13

·         Reliance / BSNL / BHARTI / are trying to take mobile telephony to areas in an aggressive manner, Redding on the back of increasing leledensity in rural areas, JAM will enable poor to “access” job related in fo the same way rich / urban youth do,

Page no =15

·         Mobile phones included as a kind of status symbol. Some 350 million last  month.

Page no = 16

·         Does JAM fit into this? Will it crease its own demands?

Page no = 17

·         Thru use of mobile’s JAM targets to penetrate small towns.

Page no = 18

·         By making job-alerts FREE, we are removing the first hardily to the use penetration of JAM. if we manage to tie up with all MSP then JAM can reach the farthest  corner of India, since 80% of mobile are “prepaid”, cash does not become an issue if one wants to “apply online”

Page no = 19

·         JAMISA a new “series”(wwj ) GR ( Global ) are must certainly experiments”

Page no = 20

·         Interest services Providers ( ISP)  tended to carter to middle-class & rich whereas mobile service Providers ( msp) are targeting rural poor, where tale-density  is  still barely 1.9 /1000,against urban Indian ‘s  21/100.

·         By aggregating job- advts from many jobsites, will do rule jobseekers (who want to “sell their service)

·         If, thru Jam rural youth can get even a few interview calls, they will get “new sense of personal world”

Page no = 21

·         JAM ia an inn ovation Also unemployed or under employed & in need of jobs. JAM will save them.

Page no = 24

·         To ramp up volumes, I plan to reduce “apply” charge from RS- 3/= to Rs- 1/= in future only then can poor unemployed can afford to use Jam,

Page no = 25

·         5 years down the line JAM will need to be offered in Hindi and “apply online” will need to be voice-active.

·         All present PC cost RS.- 20.000 & internet cost RS- 20 per hours & cell phone cost RS- 1000 soon cell phone pieces will drop further.  Soon MSP will start giving away cell-phone “free “with each subscription. Asp cannot afford to give away PC”free”with each internet connection –though in 2000 some dot.com tried!

Page no = 26

·         In India internet penetration is 2.9 million connections of 1050 million so internet – based job-search is not the correct solution on the other had wireless cell phones will reach 200 million people by 2010.

Page no = 26

·         In jam jobseeker does   need a pc + internet for the first time ( to register & post his resumes on wwj ) there after he is “freed” from PC/ internet of course cell time –to –time , so electivity will be needed, but soon hand gest  that can be re- charged by “cranking : will be available, such small radio ‘s are commend ally available for ¾ years, then dependence upon electricity will 90 !

Page no = 30

·         If we drop “apply “sms to RS- 1/= (From Current Rs- 3/=) Jam Can Become Truly “Affordable” – But Msp Will Need To Agree.

Page no = 32

·         If, someday call centers move to small towns, the small town fresh graduates would not flock to cities in search of jobs, and still become inserted in national network of “Employment” this will happen when telecom / broadband reach small towns.

Page no = 33

·         Can unemployed apply for jobs without pc internet?

Page no = 34

·         Poor countries need cell phones costing  RS- 500/= or less with only 2 function talk send receive sms then 500 million phones can be sold.

Page no = 37

·         For  4/5 years now , jobsites have been delivering jobs  lefts to candidates via email  in JAM we shifted the delivery  -process to Wireless mobile phone inset of “wired” pc.

Page no = 38

·         Our job- advts downloading process needs to be “customized” for each jobsite but once this problem is solved; process becomes automatic / reliable / efficient, without further human.

·         Intervention. Same with the “processes” of /creating a structured database matchmaking / sms creation / delivery / dely of resumes case mail when someone “applies”

·         Someday Gobel Recruiter too, will handle marketing & promo for its partner jobsite in a centralized manner. We too wish that partner jobsites retain their individual identities.

Page no = 39

·         GR collect jobs & resumes from 200 small jobsites in to a central pool.

·         All requests from jobserach resumes search get processed centrally in GR.

·         National marketing 100.000 jobs to jobseekers / 1 million resumes to 10000 Employers (someday 100.000 employers. Due to scalene architecture)

Page no = 40

·         Our fun notion Profile Graphs (in image Builder) are somewhat dissimilar the “percentile – score” of a given candidates, shows his “relative” rank amongst “peers” belonging to same functions, may be it will take 2/3 years to convene HR managers of this powerful “did” these graphs are “diagnosis “at its simplest level, in JAS, we have targeted 480/= papers to reach out to jobseekers in small towns.

Page no = 41

·         May be I should try spreading JAM message thru colleges (final year students who soon start looking out for jobs.

·         I plan to roe-in 70.000 / cybercafés to tell their visitors to tog in FREE CONTENT “page no daily so that thry become familiar with the idea of “latest / delivered DAILY on their mobile. Only thru such “”truncating” can we convince jobseekers of the benefits of JAM.

Page no = 42

·         Times jobs. Com is organizing “job fairs” in Mumbai, every ultimate month.

Page no = 43

·         In design of Global  Recruiter, this is our problem as well Each partner  website , would unique U/I  and databases  ( jobs & resumes ) without requiring them to change  these , we must succeed in creating a common / central database , which will “receive” &” deliver” seam Lesley.

·         I have yet to meet this one! Even my 18 year old grand –daughter does not send this many!!

·         Beyond JAM. (Thru mobile), days back we sent JAS Proposal to 480 news après. Next JAT (job Alert on TV)

Page no = 44

·         We are trying same thru Global Recruiter we will from such partnership with jobless & portals (including ICICI portal ) see my note “Get self-Employed “However , without financial resources,  we cannot launch many initiatives. At one  time.

Page no = 45

·         I look forward to a day when JAM (job Alert on mobile) bemuse a “basic services” probably taka 2 years.

Page no = 48

·         If JAM succeeds in India, many “Umitators” will crop up all over the world.

·         I remember one such blue- cooled soap from NIRMALA,

Page no = 49

·         Talking of alternatives “Apply online from a jobsite is FREE  but in JAM “apply online” from a mobile will a PC requires an internet  connection – which casts RS- 20/HR  at a cybercafé, Hence JAM still work-out cheaper in long run.

·         Quality case measured in freshness / relevance / aggregation / convenience etc. of jam far superior than an email alert on a PC.

Page no = 50

·         In 943 employment exchanges of India, some 44 million unemployed are registered 17% of these are graduates. Then   there are million more who not heard of an “employment” exchange”! This is so bad considering all these exchanges put together can “place” only during 2003. !

·         It is a target market and with addition of 18 million to our popup action last month, this crossed 350 million & in India 62 million. I am waiting for this to happen for JAM.

Page no = 52

·         Problem of joblessness (un employ ments ) remains same all more so in developing countries hence, if JAM clicks in India it will find many takers else.

Page no = 55

·         A phone keypad is not only much simpler than a PC keyword; it is now well accepted even in rural areas.

Page no = 57

·         In Global Recruiter , we plan to offer such “innovations” as JAM / jab/ram/ rab/ all of which provide great value to jobseekers & employers,

Page no = 60

·         This is what we are trying thru global Recruiter to leverage existing resources of many jobsites.

Page no = 61

·         We will need to cope with this when we go out to market global Recruiter to jobsites.

Page no = 67

·         For us, this will comprise msp / newspapers / TV channels / cybercafés / ISP / Radio / Broadband / DTH / interactive TV (iptv)

·         Today an email offer will go to some. 250 websites to PULL daily from WWJ, fresh database pf job-advts (posted during last 24 hrs.,)

 Page no = 68

·         Gobel Recruiter will, pretty much, do the same Hopefully GRS U/I will someday become industry standard.

Page no = 69

·         In WWJ, we are leveraging the destruction network of mobile service provider, which has reached 56 million now & will reach 200 million in 2008.

·         In Global Recruiter, we will try to leverage the distribution leverage each other to help MSP & job sites make more money if successful these binary   stars revolving around each other will create an online of recruitment. Hopefully WWJ /gr combing.

Page no =70

·         Thru JAM/ JAB/ RAM/RAB, Global Recruiter will change many existing “practices” in online recruitment.

·         I expect all jobsites joining Global Recruiter to “win” thru sharing of databases.

Page no = 144

·         Since we send job-lefts against only those jobs which get posted (on jobsites) during last 24 Hours. JAMMERS. Must look-up their alerts everyday on each handset, there is an upper limit as to the no of sms that can be stored.

Page no =145

·         Scaling up of distribution in virtual world is easier,

Page no = 148

·         Vis –a-viz other jobsite, our “cost advantage” arises from our “Distribution Network” of mobile services providers, besides of 1)  downloading job- advts  2) matchmaking  3) Delivering as sms 4) billing 5) collection of our share –of- revenue from service providers 6) complitistics. In Global Recruiter we will follow same model with partner jobsites.

Page no = 149

·         Delivering job-Advts-summary (JAS) to newspapers, everyday (free), is part of our “social Responsiveness. JAS, will Provide a “level –playing- field” are, today deprived of job-related. To small-town jobseekers, who info 90/% jobs are in 6 metros.

·         If news peppers quote WWJ as “source” (for JAS) ,It Could G enervate business  for wwj, thru free publicity for wwj across entire country.

Page no = 150

·         WWJ / JAM will need to convince jobseekers that they 1) need not visit many jobsite  2) will get “relevant” job alerts on thermopiles 3) will be able to “apply online” from their mobile.

·         A great majority (99%) of job- seekers in small towns do not have access to in termed or even a pc!

Page no = 153

·         It is quite possible that small –town jobseekers, would want to bypass PCI internet in far out of mobile phoned to access job related in FO.

·         “Mobile service Providers” instead of / “internet service Providers” as the distribution- method (for distributary job- related info)

·         Even JAM is not targeting manual labors (e.g.: construction project .JAM target small town / middle- class / graduate unemployed, looking for clerical / adminjobs + call centers / BPO JOBS .

Page no = 155

·         Nearly70 % of mobile owners in India is on “prepaid” mode-which relives msp from headache of billing/ collection etc.

Page no = 156

·         This Will Also Hold In Case OF wwj / jam. Once Registered & activated, a jobseeker will expect job-alerts to start from very next day and everyday thereafter,

·         WWJ caters only to jobseekers GR will cater to both, corpo & jobseekers.

·         Recruit guru. Will cater only to corporates. That will be the complete solution.

·         Com patience search not resume search (JAM / JAB/ RAM /RAB)

Page no = 157

·         We have to do the same / without moving out of our chairs!

Page no = 160

·         We are targeting millions of JAM subscribers. “Personal interaction” with them is not possible, but every customer email must be replied within 24 hrs. Dinette Marketing like Amway Tupper ware Avon concertizes Eureka Fore’s Peerless Sahara etc.

Page no = 161

·         These will also apply to par her jobsites of Global Recruiter. Resumes + Job Ads.

Page no = 163

·         It will be same with WWJ/ JAM. Thru ( or thru any other method ) once a jobseeker find a job-& joins, for several months – or even years –he is unlike ling to need the services –which ,I am sure he will if found the job thru, JAM of course. By making job alerts. “Free, we have made it easy for him to continue with the service.

Page no = 164

·         Very much like Kerala or Madhapar in Kutch.

Page no = 170

·         But first the poor man needs a job, before he can buy either!

Page no = 217

·         For long, I have thought of “partnering” with the central / state Govt’s, where by those 44.6  million unemployed  Exchanges, can asked to register on wwj –in order to receive FREE JOBALERTS.

Page no = 221

·         For JAM, “touching “a jobseeker thru mobile is only a beginning. Starting today, job Advt-suumary (JAS) will get quote manically emailed to 10 newspapers.  Written to some 517 cybercafés re:  “free content” hoping surfers will touch JAM colleges are our next target.  We will use when we have enough data. We have to target final year college students.

Page no = 222

·         Perfectly “matching” job-alerts. Delivered over mobile. Free.

·         We are trying to do same by making job-alerts “FREE” that should remove any resistance reluctance to “try-out”

Page no = 223

·         What can we do for those job-seekers? Who cannot afford RS- 3/= for “Apply online”sma?

·         The types of jobs posted on jobsites are not for “rural” people, but certainly for small-town graduates, our “channel” for them will be Jas Printed In local newspapers.

·         “Apply online” as opposed to “Getting interview call” for this reason, I have asked Abhi to highlight keywords in resumes in red & gold begin emailing to job- advertiser.

Page no =224

·         We have listed, JAM- attributes in “job Nirvana” & in “ownership Issues, question is “How do get these attributes across to the jobseekers? We have no money to advertise we are sending emails (to some 8 lakh jobseekers) but   do read emails? We can deliver JAS to a 1000 newspapers (no problem) & we can sustain it as well. We went JAS, becomes it is low cost.

Page no = 226

·         My target group is final year college students, I can reach them thru their colleges, I am trying to compile email ID of colleges, this is the group that is buying 70% of new mobile connections and also quite comfortable with the word fast amongst friends. Collegians are most sms savvy.

Page no = 227

·         Once we start highlighting keywords in a resume, we could start branding it as the “image Builder”  we can where   bounced back the image Builder version to concerned jobseeker, advising him that this is what we will deliver to employers when they click “APPLY online” for a jobseeker , the keywords in this resume are “active in gradients”

·         “Jam sample” panel on our home page is such a kit thru this panel, we try to prove that sms alert truly represents the full original advt.

Page no = 228

·         We have to get HR managers to praise the JAM process. Their views will be respected once by the jobseekers. Once HR mangers start getting image Builder (resume with Keywords highlighted) and if these simplify their evaluation of resumes. Then they will, gradually DEMAND that jobseekers send only such resumes, we are going to try this out tomorrow.

Page no = 229

·         I, too believe that the trio of wwj / Global / Recruiter / Recruiterguru.com will shape the future of e- recruitment industry in India (to begin with) this may take 5 years.

·         We are working to make JAM.an instrument for “Mass- customization”

Page no  = 231

·         For us, not only should our communication campaign have to be “innovative”, they have to be “cheap “as well. Can we say “Jammers get jobs / Rest gets hope”?

Page no = 241

·         One can consider * city based jobseekers having ready “access” to newspapers / internet ( to reach jobsites ) “top of pyramid consumers. “BOP consumers”

·         small town jobseekers without internet & times Hindu  statement.

Page no = 242

·         My vision is to take the job-related info to job seekers, in the farthest corner of India, instantly & cheaply.

Page no = 251

·         When we develop JAM for 1) Factory workers 2) Vocational subordinate staff 3) trading / Retailing staff.

·         Temporary staff. Etc.  We would need to “align” job prefaces.
