PERMISSION MARKETING – SETH GODIN

====================================================================================

When I read any book, I scribble my comments / notes in the margins

These reflect my views / opinions about what the author is saying – including my disagreement

Often, my comments are in the nature of telling myself :

Hey ! We should try out this idea in our own business ( Head-hunting / Online Recruitment )

Following are my comments re :

=====================================================================================

Page No. xvi

·         In resume Rater “what recruitment problem does it solve?, I Wrote yesterday : It saves you time ( the scarcest resource)

·         When job-seekers send a PULL SMS to access job alerts, they will do so of self-volition. We are not pushing any message! This is one big difference from World-Wide-Jobs of 2004.

Page No. xvii

·         Now that we are about to relaunch JAM on platform of customizeResumes, the core benefit, will be, once again, “Saving Time”. No need to find an internet-connected PC and login. Just Apply online, onthego.

Page No. xviii

·         Pulling a jobalert thru PULL SMS and then Applying online directly from mobile, will be made possible by HP lab India’s TASKLET technology – which is interactive – though not a dialogue.

Page No. xx

·         See use of Google Sets in Poll-e-Ticks”, fetching related keywords.

Page No. xxi

·         Even in Resume Rater, the “Customised Keywords List” is an example.

Page No xxiv

·         Tomorrow, we hope to sendout colour brochure of IndiaRecuiter to some 900 Mumbai-based companies. Total cost Rs. 30000/- Our first advt. expenses.

·         Rest of our publicity, so far is based on emails.

Page No. xxv

·         We plan to install Google’s Web Analytics on even page of IR. Yes, now we can measure daily traffic but still not found a cheap way to increase traffic.

Page No. xxvi

·         Will Tasklet based JAM be such a thing?

Page No. 1

·         Getting hold of an internet connected PC and logging into our website to lookup job alerts certainly requires paying “attention” But mobile job alerts can be attended to while travelling.

Page No. 3

·         One does not need to “interrupt” travelling to use JAM.

Page No. 6

·         Tasklet-based Jam, may work to “Lock-in” a jobseeker ( since all job-portal is just- a click away!

·         May be candidates who have registered at Monster/ Naukari are satisfied May be it is same with HR mgrs. too

Page No. 7

·         Must have tripled since this was written 10 yrs ago.

Page No. 16

·         Tasklet based JAM will expose the jobseekers to only 1 job-advt. at a time. He will Control how many he wants to be exposed to.

Page No. 18

·         Naukri will spend Rs. 9.6 Crore & Monster

·         PrintMedia advts. In 2007

·         On our envelopes, we have printed: If these are your problems then open this envelope.”

Page No. 19

·         We are trying to create a market in Profile, which only IndiaRecruiter can issue, making it Scare we say profile: the new currency of Recruitment : Issued by www.IndiaRecruiter.net

Page No.20

·         Our job is to make a text resume appear like a “Commodity”

Page No. 21

·         If I do nothing else, I can write 4/5 personalized emails per hour. I refer to their interviews/quotes in the newspaper, to make the emails appear personal.

Page No. 24

·         In last 8 weeks since launch and persuading some 33 companies to sign-up not a single company has posted a job may be they know that there are no jobseekers, who are likely to see that ad. Nor conducted any resume search no resumes either!

·         What Info can we offer to corpos?

·         By first offering Resumes Rater for free then, offering updated versious, I hope we can gradually change,” beliefs / habits” of HR mgrs.. to download, they don’t even need to register1 to use its full potential, I think they will call-up and “reveal” themselves.

Page No. 25

·         To jobseekers who register we have offered incentive of Free Resumes Blast for which all other jobportals charge between Rs. 1000 to Rs. 1500/-

Page No. 28

·         That makes each jobseeker using our free Resumes Blast, an “Interruption marketer” same with us, when we blast a demo profile to 50,000 corporates! But then, I am not trying to get a job for that candidate- I am only interested in gettingHR mgr to notice that profile & wonder what it is.

·         I only want to arouse HR mgrs. curiosity enough for him to visit IndiaRecruiter.net

Page No. 29

·         Over the last 8 months, I have posted my comments on thousands of websites  articles/blogs. Etc. As a result, CustomizeResume, now has, 17015 incomung links- so vital for a high pagerank on Google. I keep posting 80/100 comments/day.

Page No. 35

·         Expert endorsements.

·         Seminars with drinks & dinner?

·         Free ResumeRater?

·         I hope same happens with Resume Rater.

·         In 3yrs since launch, some 15000+ copies of ResumesRater have been downloaded form various sites – BUT, hardly anybody seems to be using!

Page No. 37

·         Read our very first letter (snail-mail) being sent today (under Rahul’s name), to 33 corporates who have registered so far telling them, we have only % registred Jobseekers so far!

Page No. 39

·         Just checkout with Sourabh. He confirmed that the “ Customized Lists “that any user of Resume Rater creates (by investing time/effort), can be “SAVED” for repeated uses in future. Their time/effort does not go waste.

Page No. 40

·         Even if we don’t get to sign MOU with L&T Infotech, to build their job-portal, e will try to persuade them to download / use Resume Rater in order to speed-up their RATING process. It is their need & we have the right too!

Page No.41

·         In last 4 yrs, I have tried Classified Ads / Comments on other people’s blogs / articles Promo emails to candidates & corporates , Promo emails to jounalista / opinion makers.

Page No. 42

·         I suppose, when any person, give us his email ID Volutarily, then he is granting us permission to communicate with him/ engage in a dialogue.

Page No.43

·         Who give us their email ID, voluntarily? Jobseekers / HR mgrs./ Strangers / Headhunters

·         It would be worthwhile to findout, how they have progressed in last 8 yrs. Since this was written.

Page No. 46

·         A of now, Profiles are available only at IndiaRecruiter.

·         If book is delivered as email?

Page No. 47

·         Somewhat indirectly, jobseekers are granting us their “permission” to forward their resumes to matching employers. Similarly, Employers have given us their permission to forward their job-advts to candidates.

·         Hopefully IIT will do this.

Page No. 48

·         IndiaRecruiter managed to sign-up a few hundred jobseekers after 3 ½ yrs whereas CustomizedResumes & signed up 1286 candidates since launch on 14 Nov2009.

Page No.49

·         Seems Contradictory to previous page.

·         This is what we are struggling with for last 8 weeks. How do we get a Million jobseekers to Submit Resumes? Ofcourse, without spending a million Rupees in advertising!

Page No. 50

·         Which is, sending jobseekers, “ unsolicited” email. How else can they come to know about the existence of IndiaRecruiter?

·         We van only afford email-except for 200 brochures sent yesterday thru courier to corportaes.

Page No. 51

·         When Resume Rater gets ready ( for downloading), Iwill need to send emails to 50000 corporate Recruiters ( + National HRD Network Members), to download it – without revealing their identity!

·         Email will “sell” ResumeRater not India-Recruitor. Then the user will head to frequently login to India Recruiter to down-load latest version.

·         We have same version for last 3 years!

·         By giving away Resume Rater free and without having to reveal identify and with full rights to make any no. of copies for distribution I hope users will return to India Recruiter. Not happened.

Page No. 52

·         When we send out very first email to 5 Lakhs jobseekers, what Free sample can we offer? What “Permission” can be ask? Is Underpaid? A free sample?

·         We repeated this mistake in customize then corrected it.

·         Submit Resume is a long form!

·         What can we offer him for freee download even without registering? Ofcourse free Resume Blast is a “bribe” but right now, no jobseeker could care for that!

·         To HR mgrs., 15000 interview questions id Free info ( for a while) – what can we offer free to jobseekers?

Page No. 55

·         How do you figureout?

Page No. 57

·         “Resume Rater” download page will have a writeup. What recruitment problem does it solve?

·         Our broucher enevelope reads: “Are these your problems?”

Page No.58

·         In yesterday’s letter to 33 corpo. Subscribers we apologized for their frustration with resumes search results by admitting that there are only resumes so far! Idea is too build trust by being honest & transparent.

·         Maybe we need to send a similar message to other 700 placement agencies.

Page No. 63

·         Yesterday, we sent , all 900 broachers to firms based in Mumbai only. We concentrated all of our effort / money on a single city. We also gave our local address (beside email/fax/phone no.) I should have looked at the list of the target companies.

Page No. 65

·         May be it is a “blessing in disguise” that we have no money to spend on print/TV/Internet advt.! I would have been tempted to waste all that money.

Page No. 68

·         Despite cumulative download of 15000+ copies from various websites, I don’t find Recruiters using it extentensively.

·         The only cause daily increase in counter is due to Tushar ( our own guy) rating 100+ unsolicited resumes received daily by 3P.

·         May be it will take another 6 yrs.

Page No 69

·         I hope that HR mgrs. who download Resume-Rater, will use it frequently- may be several times everyday. In the process they will become comfortable with the process of Score/ rating. Hopefully this familiarity will lead them to tryout IndiaRecruiter – a gradual Switch.

·         I am even considering giving away free some 650000 text resumes, so that people who download ResumeRater also have, some actual/real resumes to rate! That way they will gain experience.

·         I did this thru our features Start your Own Business , on IndiaRecruiter. Some 2.9 million resumes got downloaded – before we stopped this feature. May be I will restart someday.

Page No. 76

·         We may never appoint a candidate on behalf of our corpo. Subscriber but, we will certainly Shortlist / recommend. Some suitable ones, based on past Buying/searching history.

Page No. 78

·         We are planning to recommend suitable resumes when a corp. subscriber posts a job ad this will save him time to conduct a separate ResumeSearch. If he is happy with our recommendation. He will begin to trust our selection.

Page No. 79

·         To choose candidates, recruiters must, first “Read & Rate” many resumes then decide who is excellent, who is good, who is poor etc. Some HR mgrs. may not be confidents  of their ability to make the right choice. They would rather depend upon Resume Rater to decide / Choose on their behalf!

Page No. 80

·         A Replacement executive, everytime someone Resigns/Ratires/Dies! We only need to capture such events/ then search our database.

Page No. 82

·         I have written many pages on how to capture the selection criteria history of both jobseekers & recruiters. I have prepared atleast 4/5 notes inlast 3yrs. But no s/w developers to implemets! It is tough to do many things with just 2 developers.

Page No 84

·         8 yrs on ( in 2007), there is Virtual currency on secondLife.com

Page No 86

·         Because of our “Pay per Click” model, we are capturing every click of jobseeker on every job advt. so, we know and very accurately WHO paid attention!

·         Read or webpage “Don’t Wait”

·         We have solved the problem of click Fraud thru jobseeker Login.

Page No.91

·         Thru free download of Resume Rater, we are really trying to promote IndiaRecruiter although very indirectly may be it is, under 30 recruiters, who would use it most, because they might want to feel smart & feel in control.

Page No. 98

·         Our current dialogue with L & t Infotech is entirely dependent on my personal relationship with G.K.Apte.

·         Getting some 15/20 companies to register was same.

Page No. 102

·         Last month same thing happened with launch of IPhone.

Page No 109

·         If and when we introduce Opportunity Alert, we will offer the Headhunters, one more way to connect with the potential jobseekers.

Page no 110

·         Executivers who receive an Opportunity Alerts message might be surprised but many are already used to getting phonecalls from headhunters & generally that inflates their ego!

Page No 111

·         By 2010, Google has turned this into a Science.

Page No. 114

·         We sent out 900 snail mail brouchers at a cost of Rs. 30000/- If we get30 registrations, that is nearly Rs. 1000/- per registration. Which is quite expensive in the Indian context But if we Ultimately succeeed in convincing these 30 to switch over to profiles, Rs. 1000/- will be more than justified. We need some “Tipping Point”

·         Ineach promo email, I am quition them. I hope that will make then pay attention.

·         In my emails, I am trying to inflate their EGO, by quoting them!

Page No. 115

·         Email promoting “Resume Rater” download to 50000 corporate HR mgrs. / Recruiters, must be drafted to answer “what is in it for me?” What would be the reward for downloading?

Page No. 116

·         This is the rationale behind our salary Graph. I should quite while writing to seth Godin.

·         Job Preference page in WWJ.

·         In customizeResume, we are sending Job Alerts based on their Registration but this not as good as asking for their “Job Preferences”

Page No. 118

·         In CustomizeResume, we really Rohan realized that we were asking for a hell of a lot information in our submit resumes form. So we split it into two Basic Registration was made very simple. Candidates can go on furnishing additional info abnout themselves in stages, over a period of time, when ever they feel like.

·         Having read this 3 yrs ago , I should have followed this!

·         Resume Rater will be a free download & no other jobportal in the entire world offers anything similar.

Page No. 119

·         Todays paper says, timesjobs.com delivers to job-advertisers everymoth, some 5 million “Apply Online” resumes! Monster/Naukri may be delivering another 5 million making a total of 10 million/month, flooding the hard-disks of thousands of HR mgrs.. Today, I have drafted an email for sending to 50000 corp. job advertisers free downloading of resume Rater.

Page No. 128

·         There is a good chance that IndiaRecruiter can manage to ride piggy back on Resume Rater. But, for that to happen , we must tell millions about free downloading od Resumes Rater. If someone downloads & user Resumes Rater regularly then there is a chance he will visit IndiaRecruiter. After 3 ½ yrs, hardly gets 25/30 visitors/day!

Page No. 129

·         Ever changing Profiles especially the salry Profile, is a process/feature that should bring jobseekers again & again But that would happen only when, at least a 1000 jobseekers, register everyday! Just did not happen!

Page No. 130

·         This prophesy has proved wrong. TV on web & TV on mobile is doing very well.

·         Youtube gets 8 hours worth of videos every second! And has 200 millions users.

·         Mobile handsets where you van tap on an icon and access youtube/ Facebook/ Linkedin are flooding the markets.

Page No. 131

·         In my individual promo emails that I send to top executives, the idea behind quoting them is to get them to notice / read that email, rather than delet it as spam. Idea is to entire them to read and hopefully, click on profiles IIT.

·         Read my today’s email to Revathi of siteonmobile.com HP labs with subject line: How to entice non-users?

Page No. 135

·         Hopefully, my second email ( reminder) will today go out 44 corp. who  have registered so far in past 8 weeks also an email to 1000 Recru. Agencies and an email to 900 companies to whom we sent brochures.

·         As soon as Resume Rater is uploaded another email will go out.

Page No. 138

·         Indians, by nature, are far more to learnt of privacy invasion as compared to Ammericans & Europeans. Indian execuitves may delet spam but are unlikely to complain to ISp

·         In last 3 yrs I musy have sent over 10 millions emails with hardly 10/15 complaints.

Page No. 139

·         For downloading Resume Rater, a person does not have to give his email ID or reveal himself in any manner But we will count the No. of Downloada so, we will know what percentage have downloaded.

Page no 141

·         We have our email ID / Phone no/fax no. on every page + name of the developer who designed & application / feature.

Page No. 142

·         A recent survey should that 60% of all jobseekers had posted their resumes on multiple jobsites.

·         Today, I came across WWW.JantaKhoj.com, which claims to have personal records of 500 million Indians.

Page No. 145

·         I hope, using HP’s tasklet, we can make JAM a very simple application to use.

·         If rural youth can get job alerts on their mobiles and be able to Apply online directly from their mobiles, then they may feel smart.

Page No. 150

·         On Mainpage of Resume Rater, we are listing our phone no.

·         We will have a history of all the advts. Clicked / viewed by a job-seeker. So we will know what kind of jobs he is looking for.

Page No. 151

·         In poll-e-ticks, users vote for keyword to continuously change their weightage – which , in turn, will change profiles.

·         Today, we decided to give away (free) some Resumes along with Resume Rater, primarily to encourage trial.

Page No. 152

·         In our Pay per click model, we are going one step further ( from a FLAT free irrespective of usage.

·         Apparently, Indian mentality seems very different. Here, more than 60% of mobile connection are Prepaid for some fixed amount, very different form affluent countries. To Indian Mobile Users, a postpaid connection means unlimited Liability an open ended expense mode! Indias like to know in advance, the extent of the damage! A fixed subscription.

Page No. 153

·         Q- How many peoplecan you send a greeting card, everymonth ( thru snail mail)?

·         A – Obviously, not many.

·         You can send e-birthday cards (emails) to millions but that is unlikely to impress anyone!

·         I plan to build anticipation in offering free resumes along with Resume Rater by listing what ( category) of resumes will become available for downloading every week.

Page No. 154

·         Today, after uploading our new feature we will send out email to our 1293 registered candidates

·         I suppose AA companies complete Travel History of each every customer.

Page no. 155

·         I plan to use emails to keep corp. users & jobseekers, informed about NEW services / features etc even industry tit-bits. Let us show our Openness to talk about our competitors.

Page No. 157

·         My promo emails for Resume Rater will contain a link, clicking which will open Resume Rater webpage, from where any visitor can download the Tool even without registering.

Page No. 160

·         After using Resume Rater for a few weeks, and being satisfied with the top resumes rated 80, I expect busy HR mgrs. to Cede decision making to RR

Page No. 164

·         To continue to be able to use Resume Rater ( offline),  user will need to link-up online with IndiaRecruiter, after every 50 sessions & upload latest version. Then continue for another 50 sessions.

Page No. 165

·         Resume Rater will be such a vehicle, on back of it, India Recruiter will ride piggy back. That is why it is FREE and can be downloaded anonymously without giving out any information in exchange.

·         In our case, these who also want to download a few hundred resumes FREE ( along with the Rater) will only need to provide their email ID.

Page No. 166

·         Having downloaded Resume Rater, hopefully, recruiters would use it daily and in the process get used to the concept of Relevance based on their score. Once he is comfortable with this concept, it will be easy concept of percentile score & Profiles and Resume rater is FREE.

·         If resumes ranked Excellent by Resumes Rater acyually turn out to be so, then RR will acquire TRUST.

Page No. 167

·         After 3 ½  yrs, we have 1300 employers registered on IndiaRecruiter,. In these 3 ½ yrs, close to 15000 copies of Resumerater got downloaded but, there is no visible indication that Recruiters have fallen in love with it!

Page No. 168

·         On each Resume Rater, we have provided a link Give Your Opinion which opens outlook Express but we NEVER received a single email!!

·         In Poll-e-Ticks we already have provision to give CREDIT to those who contribute Functions. Now we plan to give credit even to those who contribute New Keywords.

Page No. 169

·         For Popularising JAM ( in CustomizeResumes) , we need to get thousands of mobile pulling out their mobile, entering & send to view a gew jobalerts on small screen. If he is happy with the simplicity, he will register.

·         Recruiters who will use Resume Rater will be our Trial customers and we are giving it FREE!

Page No. 170

·         How can we get Google / yahoo / Microsoft to notice Resumes rater? Can we sites like widget Gallery / Filehippo etc?

·         Can we get DIGIT magazine to load it on the CD & distribute?

Page No. 171

·         Although, on our own, we uploaded Resume Rater on ¾ websites, within a few months, some 30/40 other web sites copied / pasted it on their own sites! This is how, by now, total downloads exceed 15000!

Page No. 174

·         Our Revenue Model is same. When a candidates click on a job advts. We change re I/- to the advertiser. We too, insist on a log-in to prevent “ click-fraud”

·         For the moments, both on IndiaRecruiter & CustomizeResumes, all services are FREE. Our first job is to build-up traffic?

Page No. 175

·         We will do the same.

·         We don’t paln to pay anything to job-seekers for clicking on job-advts, so he has no incentive to go on clicking.

Page No. 176

·         Anyone can navigate thru all features on IndiaRecruiter/ CustomizeResume, without registering.

·         I have said exactly the same thing on the home page of IR.

·         We have planned for Recruiters to view all resumes downloaded in respective Resume Holder & all job advts posted by them AND how many / who looked at these job advts & then Applied or even did not apply.

Page No. 177

·         We paln to do this when a corpo. Subscriber submits a job advts.

Page No. 178

·         We have planned to capture each chick made by corp. subscribers & by jobseekers to construct their “ purchase/ search Histories & build a Recommendation System.

·         We have same model both in IndiaRecruiter & customize Resume.

Page No. 179

·         Pattern / trend based on past purchase history recommend system.

Page No. 180

·         Like our Job pref page in WWj.

·         Like JobAlerts / Resume Alerts

Page No. 182

·         India has, as pf now, some 70 million internet users. As against this, some 650 million Indias have mobile phones. May be 500 million mobile owners have never experienced internet! Thru Tasket based job alert on mobile, we plan to give them their first internet experience !.

Page No. 183

·         Someday, we will have something similar for all corpo. Subscribers and jobseekers.

Page No. 185

·         We sent around 1800 emails 2 days back. By now, some 7 corporates have registered in last 2 days. More may register by evening.

Page No. 190

·         If we succed in uoploading Resume Rater by Thursday, then over the weekend, we will send promo email ( 10 million Resumes?) to 50000 recruiters, offering free download & resume Rater + some resumes. I expect good response.

·         Resume Rater will speed up recruitment process and vastly improce quality of candidates selected for interviewing.

Page No. 191

·         I have, on purpose, not prompoted Customize Resume amongst Recruiters. There is no point unless we have 50000 resumes registered candidates, on our website. We have barely 1306 with 6 having registered today! Normally, it average 1 day but when they Blast their Resumes, they are indirectly promoting our site. Today, some 2000 resumes got blasted!

Page no. 192

·         If Resume Rater proves popular, we plan to follow it up 10/12 weeks later with a light version of desktop based Interactive Interview Tool.

·         Against each download, we plan to capture, No. of sessions. After every 50 sessions downloader has to login again & again. So, we will know, who is using, how much.

Page No. 193

·         I plan to send a new message to each group, once a week. Group are – Subscribers / Registered Jobseekers / 1000 Recruit Agencies / 50000 Job Advertisers / 600000 jobseekers more groups will get added.

Page no. 194

·         Corporates need employees and jobseekers want jobchanges now & then for lifetime. When jobseekers exceed the no of available jobs, Apply online click will go up. When there is a shortage of talent, clicks on Resumes will go up! It is a win win situation!.

·         Page No. Right! Every print media Advt. does.

Page No. 196

·         Our next step is to start phoning those 50 corp. who have registered.

Page No. 197

·         This is why, to such people, I am sending personalized emails, quoting / repeating, what they told some journalist, somewhere & in what context. Then I link up his/her quote with my message.

Page No. 198

·         A few days back satish Pradhan- head HR Tata Sons, replied to our email. Rahul has followed up with emails but time has come to phone.

Page No. 199

·         In our case, every page is a homepage / si temp & no one can ever get lost!

Page No. 202

·         This is precisely our problem too, right now. How can I get HR mgrs. to Prescribe use of profiles, to jobseekers? I know that jobseekers would Listen to HR mgrs. & act accordingly if advised by them.

·         I am planning to promote Resume Rater amongst HR mgrs. as a first step.

Page No. 203

·         I now realize that this is just not going to happen ! Not in near future, in any case.

Page No. 211

·         But, in last 2 yrs, DELL has opened more than 100 DEMO shapes, where rep? will answer all your tech question & even give product demos but will not book orders. For that you need to go to DELL website.

·         GM went thru this, a few years ago.

·         In no. of PC shipments, for the first time DELL over took HP in india, during last quarter.

Page No. 212

·         I keep getting DELL product literature / announcement thru snail mail.

Page No. 214

·         3 days back, we sent out 1800/1900 promo. Emails. Yesterday 9 companies registered as corp. subscribers. Today, not a single registration. So far! No problem! Next week, we repeat emails, be with a little twist.

Page No. 215

·         For the first time in last 3 yers, last week we stared sending a non-promo email. The perfect handshake to 2.8 lakh jobseekers never talking about any of our FREE services.

Page No. 217

·         We will need to persuade L & T Infotech.

Page No. 218

·         In the last 6 months, I have been posting my comments on blogs/ articles of others. I choose only those webpage which are relevant to jobs/ resumes/ interview/ employment etc. at bottom of my comment .

·         If my comment gets accepted / published, them this becomes a backlink to my website. The more the backlinks quantity and the better / more relevant that original blog / article quality, the more my own PageRank goes up in Google. By today, I have over 26000 backlinks pointing to my website.
