SEEING WHAT'S NEXT - CLAYTON M. CHRISTENSEN / SCOTT D. ANTHONY / ERIK A. ROTH

====================================================================================

When I read any book, I scribble my comments / notes in the margins

These reflect my views / opinions about what the author is saying – including my disagreement

Often, my comments are in the nature of telling myself :

Hey ! We should try out this idea in our own business ( Head-hunting / Online Recruitment )

Following are my comments re :

==================================================================================

Page no. xiv

·         It is right now, booming in India –with nearly 300 planes expected to be delivered in next 5 years (Indigo alone has ordered 100)! I am finding out.

Page no. xviii

·         I try to peruse this this book once again after 5 yrs. my original remarks here (in back)were written in sept 2005, i. e. about 7 months after launch of WWJ/JAM – which we shutdown in 2006. From mobile service providers (Airtel/Reliance/BSNL/MTNL) with whom we had signed revenue – sharing agreement simply took no interest in promoting/marketing JAM amongst jobseeker –and we did not have money to promote on our own. In 2006 we launched Global Recruiter followed by India Recruiter on 16-02-2007 and Customize

·         This week, we got invited by HP lab India to become their premier of site on mobile task let service – thru which, we have to deliver JAM from customize completely by passing MSP~ it may take fill Ang. End to launch this (22-07-2010).

·         Take let will enable jobseekers to access our job alert pages by sending an SMS. We will try to ensure that they can also “APPLTY ONLINE” directly from their mobiles by sending another SMS. May be time is ripe for one more attempt.

Page no. xix

·         For “supply” of job- advts, WWJ relies on monster/Naukari & jobs ahead.  After 4/5 weeks, Global Recruiter will become another source. For “Delivery” of job alerts, we rely on mobile service providers.

·         JAM customers (jobseekers) would want

·         Wider & wider choice of job-alert (USA/Canada etc.)

·         Relevant jobs matching their preference

·         Faster delivery (JOB)instead of once a-day (JAM)

·         Immediate feedback from corporates `when they when they “applyonlie.”

Page no. xx

·         Thru its website

Page no. xxi

·         With “Task let” of siteonline.com (HP lab India), our dependence on mobile service provide will go away – only to create a NEW dependence on site on mobile!!

·         Can we expect Monster/Naukari to think like this?

·         IN JAM sample, we have a caption which reads, “What matters most?

Page no. xxii

·         Their “revenue models “are the values for muster/Naukari. They make their money from corporate subscription. Even if they ‘sense’ that WWJ/JAM are disruptive, they are unlikely to give-up their revenue-model.

·         Reed my yesterday`s note tracing birth of Monster USA and why it failed fail dog/employment all the  job factory and “grasses greener” websites to flourish/threaten.

Page no. xxiii

·         In 2009- 10 Naukari`s subscription revenue (from corporates) was Afrox Rs.360 crs- with a net profit of nearly Rs. 60 crores.

·         In Customize Resume, we are daryeronsly dependent upon Naukari/Times jobs click jobs for aggregating our their RSS feeds for aggregating our job advt database.

Page no. xxv

·         If today, we were to tell recruitment manager, that they will stair getting Resume Alerts on their mobiles, within 15 minutes of pasting their job on a jobsite, would they believe?

·         And exactly reverse with jobseekers –getting job alerts? We plan to change the world of online Recruitment

·         I want jobseekers to keep their market of corpo. Subscriptions for job post & resume service BUT, I want them to keep out JAM/JAB/RAB.

·         JAM/JAB & RAM/RAB are disruptive relative to a). job search  b). resume search on jobsite

·         Mobile owners today are very used to SMS. I presume, likewise monster/Naukari have over whelming focus on corporates

Page no. xxvi

·         99% of Honste/naukari revenue come from

·         Job posting

·         Resume search

·         By corporates. And, by now they have thousands of corporates as their subscribers.

·         Ever increasing no. of job-advts on monster/Naukari websites. Indians is booming

·         We are trying to master SMS –and next MMS technologies.

Page no. xxvii

·         If Naukari is going to be taken over by YAHOO, then are Naukari Mgrs. likely to respond to WWWJ/JAM? Not very likely (the context).

·         World wick 780 millions cell- phones will be sold in 2005.

·         By this month, there are 600+ million cell phones in India-& grousing 15/20 millions/month July 2010.

Page no. xxix

·         Thru launch of Global Recruiter, we are trying to “compliment” the resources/business-model of existing jobsites by creating a plat from. Ultimately, I hope, we will succeed in pulling in a large majority into our network.

Page no. xxx

·         Wireless (cellular) companies like Airtel/Tata / Reliance are cautiously venturing into fixed (wired) land line phone service to take on incumbents like MTNL/BSNL.

·         This month, BSNL/MTNL already launched 3G service .In 6 manths,10 other companies will follow.

·         This is no more “minutes of –use in value Added service such as

·         News/scores

·         Ringtones etc.

·         BSNL with all India footprint & MTNL are aggressing & pursuing wireless technologies

·         The only way GR could service and grow is by “interconnecting” itself with a large no. of jobsites thereby extending its “reach” (03-09-05).

Page no. xxxi

·         Its is quite possible that many entrepreneur setup new websites –and partner with GR just in order to get into e-recruitment business.

Page no. xxxii

·         Business model of jobsites are to make from corporate subscribers In WWJ/GR, our model is to make money from jobseekers (micro-payments).

·         Initially, we will keep all services free, since we don’t need to pay anything to HP India

·         We hope to become one; for online recruitment Industry.

Page no. xxxiii

·         If JAM thru HP India, clicks, we still can have an “exciting future”

·         We hope we are one.

Page no. 4

·         Hp India lab, has started site on mobile, with a stated/specific propose to “deliver website access to mobile owners, who have none/poor access to internet.”  When I wrote to them about JAM they were thrilled and offered us “premier partnership.”

Page no. 5

·         For JAM, (a disruptive innovation), our “lead customers” are small town jobseekers (many millions) who cannot afford a  Rs. 30000/= PC & who have poor access to Internet (jobsites) but most of whom will own a mobile in the next 3yrs(Rs. 2000). See my diagram of “IOB” MARKET PYRAMID”

Page no. 6

·         Searching for jobs on jobsites require, a Rs. 30000PC+ Internet connection (or spending Rs.25/hr at a cybercafé)

·         JAM is designed for people who can afford a Rs.2000/= mobile

·         JAM will enable jobseekers to send their resumes to employers with a simple SMSfrommobiles

·         Job search on jobsites require you to remain stationary.

·         We are trying to reach non-consumers thru their wireless phones

Page no. 7

·         I sent this elaborate chart to HP India which generated immediate/ positive response last week.

·         New context which moving

·         Sure, seeing a 160 character SMS job alert on a 1 ½ x1 ½ screen cannot compete with a 15” PC screen but JAM is better than nothing!

·         I believe Naukari is sending job alerts on mobile (paid service) after seeing which, jobseeker must find a PC/Internet and login to “Apply Online.”

Page no. 8

·         If sending your resume (with a simple SMS   from your mobile) can get you a JOB, then that “commute” is very productive.

·         See my note “Re structuring Recruitment written 2 days back.

·         Bottom of the pyramid cannot get job related info. visiting many jobsites is a link, JAM removes. “Job search expertise not required.

·         Hopefully, someday we will aggregate job-advts from all over the world.

Page no. 9

·         Some 30 newspapers were actually printing JAS. I have hardcopies from 5/60 we will re-introduce this service, once JAM takes off once again thru Task lets HP India

·         We plan to add “CITY-WISE” resume blast service in Customize Resume.

·         I suppose 800,000 It professionals will take to JAM in a big way when we start delivering job-alerts for jobs in USA/UK/Canada (&other English –speaking countries). They will be willing to pay for such “improvement” in JAM.

Page no. 10

·         Global Recruiter

·         I hope Global Recruiter`s (licensed) web service, will create many NEW jobsites- catering to local jobseekers and local job-advertisers. I am in hurry to promote a network till JAM succeeds.

Page no. 11

·         In Global Recruiter network all licensee jobsites will use common central database & same/identical user interfaces/displays/software’s etc.

·         Hence, every licensee is perfectly “synchronized” from day one! Total inter-operability from start to finish standard interaction & absolute predictability

·         Our target: reliable up to date job-into to every jobseeker corner of India.

·         In just 10 years?

Page no. 12

·         This (commoditization) would happen, if all jobsites were to deliver JAM/JAB/RAM/RAB. Then there will be nothing to differentiate WWJ/GR.

·         Get a job” This goal remains same.

·         All software packages & all mobile phones

·         Last week, Reliance started selling a mobile-phone for Rs.77/=

Page no. 13

·         If JAM (thru task let) proves very popular, HP India may get tempted to offer same task let to other to  job-portals- especially Naukari/Monster/Times jobs- whose subscription revenue from corporates may remain intact.

·         cumbents are Monster, Naukari, times jobs. Who are their “least demanding customers”?

·         Ans:

·         Fresh Graduates

·         BPO staffers

·         Clerical staff

·         Factory workers

·         Vocational staff

·         Retail staff

·         Anyone reading “classifieds/Help Wanted” columns in newspapers.

·         Eg: Industry Function Desig: Level skills etc! who cares? Just get me a job ANY job! I am starving!!

Page no. 14

·         We plan to exploit the “Delivery Discrepancy” of Monster/Naukari etc. we will delivery job alerts ANY TIME/ANYWHERE/IMMEDIATELY (within minutes of a job getting posted on any partner jobsite (JAB).

·         WWJ/JAM does. Micropayments from jobseekers (sending “Apply” SMS) as opposed to traditional  jobsites charging subscription from corpo. Clients, for 1. Job posting 2. Resume search

Page no. 15

·         Mobile service providers are now providing “BULK SMS” plans for each SMS, between % paise to 10 paise as compared to “occasional SMS” @ Re. 1/= this will make JAM attractive to job seekers

·         Will Global Recruiter give such advantage to WWJ?

Page no. 16

·         All PC H/W components are standard/ off the-self/bought-out items, requiring “assembly” testing, before dispatch.

·         “Order Acceptance” over its website/configuring customized PC over website/payment Acceptance over website

Page no. 17

·         “Post resume” & “post job” Forms are not “standardized” but all jobsites follow, a reasonably UNIFORM structure. This is why we have succeeded in downloading job ads & resumes from different job-sites & map these to a STANDARD DATA BASE. Now,

·         With launch of Global Recruiter, we hope our FORMS to get accepted as “standards” by online recruitment industry.

·         Now, I don’t think this can ever happen of course there is a possibility that our “stage wise” resume Form gets copied.

·         In Recruit Guru, we have plans to develop each candidates “Tenure Profile”

·         We have done this now.

·         Global Recruiter ia taking advantage of standards already in use in jobsites

·         We will get this data in GR

Page no. 20

·         For a jobseeker, “hardest problem” is getting a job (not applying-emailing a resume or even searching for a suitable job).

·         Neither WWJ nor GR, nor Recruit guru will “get a job” for jobseekers but, as time goes, we will facilitate the process (of getting a job).

Page no. 22

·         For WWJ/ job-search market, a mobile service provider is a “nonmarket player.” But for JAM, success will depend upon how aggressively MSP promotes it.

·         We can cheaply reach customers (job seekers) thru SMS & email. For both, regulations are tightening.

Page no. 23

·         we may be on the verge of overcoming our dependence on MSP~ for a SMS gateway.

·         Rohan just called-up to say that HP India lab (site on mobile have accepted us their “BETA PARTER” and have sent a non-Disclosure Agreement for signing. This could be the beginning of “resurrecting WWJ on the new plat from of customize Resume

Page no. 24

·         To being with we plan to deliver JAM for “free.” Nobody can beat that “cost/unit.” This would deter entry of others.

·         New factors which have emerged during last 5 years are

·         Rapid growth of mobiles (600 mill by now)

·         3G about to be launched

·         Poor internet/broadband penetration small towns

·         Very cheap SMS service could even be come FREE before long

·         HP`S Task let

·         Our own graphical resume customizable  too

·         Candidates “pulling” job alerts voluntarily whenever they wish.

Page no. 25

·         Global Recruiter would not require a “large fixed capital component.” But, if it succeeds in roping-in 500 jobsites as partners, could the Network (so created) become such a “Natural Monopoly”? in such an event a standalone jobsite will find it almost impossible to remain stand alone! Hence success of GR would depend upon how many websites team-up with GR and how fast.

Page no. 30

·         Let us hope, monster/Naukari think of JAM/RAM in the same way!

Page no.32

·         Someday, we will have in our data base, resumes of several executives, belonging to same firm. How can we exploit/leverage this fact? Obviously we hold these resumes in confidence/privacy-but can we find many patters which can be valuable to competing firm I think we can

Page no. 33

·         What we are trying to do with the huge resources of MSP~-which are not in our control same with resources of newspapers & TV channels.

Page no. 34

·         My simple directive to Abhi/Rajeev/Rejji, has always been, “Automate all processes-once and for all. Eliminate human intervention make human use of human beings-what computers cannot do”

Page no. 36

·         From an analysis of 500,000 job-advts that we have downloaded so for we can easily figure out who advertises on monster & on Naukari and jobs Ahead? Who advertises on more than one? On all

·         BY now we have downloaded close to 37 lakh advts. I am sure analyzing these can lead to many insights and may even help us to “Predict” the type of vacancies that these companies may have in Future. We can using these job-advt database, even develop a system to “Recommend” suitable resumes to each advertiser

Page no. 38

·         There is no (obvious) attempt on past of Monster/Naukari to reach out to small town jobseekers/fresher/ vacations staff etc.

·         Will executives of Monster/Naukari want to fight for 25-50 p of each JAM SMS? May be  they are trained to go after corporate Accounts yielding Rn 50k-m60k they have made SMS based JAM FREE

Page no. 39

·         HP`S Task let enables a user to “access” any web based “task” thru IURS (telephone) – apart from accessing with SMS. We must figure-out a method, whereby factory workers /clerical staff/etc. corporates for job sites

·         Can use IVRS based task let to 1. Submit Resume 2. Search jobs & apply online

·         As of now, Recruitment Managers, do not seem to be particularly impressed with “Graphcal resumes- but time will came when they will appreciate its benefits. Candidates are not bothered with any kind of resume! But if a certain “format” of resume will improve their chance of getting an interview- call, they will jump for it.

Page no. 40

·         We Introduced FREE resume blasting in India Recruiter 3 yrs. back with a database of ~18000 companies then, 8 months ago, we come up with FREE resume blast in Customize Resume, with a data base of (now) 35,000 companies. This keeps growing by 60/70 companies daily.

·         We are planning to provide Resume Blasting service in GR- for FREE, whereas incumbents (Monster/Naukari) charge Rs.900 1500. When they see us giving this feature for FREE, will they quit? May be because, they hardly make any money out of this we will give away free to get more resumes.

Page no. 41

·         A clerk/steno (?) typist (?) data entry operator/receptionist peon etc. couldn`t care WHAT kind of company offers him a job –as long as company is in his own city/preferably in his own vicinity All they would want to tell Tack let, using IVRS, is find me a job nearly”! And our software sends out his resume to all companies in that area!! This could be the TRUE PROMISE of task lets for millions of jobseekers! This could well prove to be a truly “Disruptive Innovation And, if some of these do get interview –calls, they will start a buzz! What could be simpler?

Page no. 43

·         what is Global Recruiter? a “sustaining” innovation or “disruptive” innovation? Answer to this question will decide whether Monster/Naukari/times jobs will attack GR or ignore it

Page no. 44

·         It is just impossible to collect money from millions of jobseekers. it is must easy to collect from a few thousand corporates.

·         Monster/Naukari just cannot afford to switch their revenue model from corporates to jobseeker

Page no. 45

·         Will/can Indian Recruitment Managers, allows Monster/Naukari to wind –up? Seem unthinkable! But what if GR offers them a better alternative? Especially in from of Resume Alert Broad cast (RAB). Right now, Recur. Mgrs. are very hard pressed to find/appoint candidates “on the double” if RAB helps them do this, that could help GR (-and partners) to establish.

·         The “high end “is brick & mortar, “head-hunting” of very senior executive/Naukari are not into that.

Page no. 46

·         Since Monster/ Naukari can`t “choose” to flee, we must expect them to fight. We don`t know how they will fight 50, our only reasonable defense would be to grow a network of 50 job sites BEFORE they take notice and launch an attack on GR

·         50, we must build- up the NETWORK, real fast.

·         Fortunately we have we have made unattractive to monster/Naukari to try to duplicate a NETWORK of jobsites with whom they are competing for the same market. We have decided to make our money in WWJ so, we don’t have to make money from GR

·         At appropriate/opportune moment, we will also try to rope-in times jobs as a partner of GR

·         Times has enormous resources – which it can use to overthrow monster /Naukari. Being a partner of GR, will enable it to do this.

Page no. 47

·         Same is true for monster/Naukari

·         But this is where we differ. Our business. Model cannot adopt it without ditching

·         Their existing model.

·         Apparently, I did engage in a lot of wishful thinking! But “dreaming” (trying to “see what is next?”) is a must for all entrepreneurs.

Page no. 54

·         The basic “premise” behind HP`S Task let is that those who have had so far, no access to PC/internet to access websites but, who are quite comfortable with their low-end mobile phones, would be happy to access websites using a device (mobile) with which they have familiarity.
