COMPETING FOR THE FUTURE - GARY HAMEL & C. K. PRAHALAD

====================================================================================

When I read any book, I scribble my comments / notes in the margins

These reflect my views / opinions about what the author is saying – including my disagreement

Often, my comments are in the nature of telling myself :

Hey ! We should try out this idea in our own business ( Head-hunting / Online Recruitment )

Following are my comments re :

==================================================================================

Pg. No. xi

·         It is obvious to me that we cannot compete with the like of Monster / Naukri / Jobs Ahead etc. ontheir “turf”, playing the game by their “rules”. We have to invent a new game with our own rules. I hope JAM will do this.

·         “Kill the Jobsearch – let jobs come searching for you”

·         Mobile phones are a statement of one’s life style

·         See my note “JAM - the harbinger of Hope”.

Pg. No. xii

·         My note “Make Luck”

·         I headed one in L & T till it started getting disbanded in 1990.

·         I expect JAM to change e-recruitment market.

·         I kept repeating this to middle-level managers at Powai, betwean 1979-87.

Pg. No. 1

·         What are the “New Rules” in e-recruitment market that, we are planning to introduce thru Recruitguru & WWJ?

·         Aggregation of job advts (one-stop-shop)

·         Stop chasing jobs-let jobs chaseyou (Door Delivery)

·         Stop filling Resume Forms (Extraction)

·         Project your Profiles (ImageBuilder)

·         Apply Apply-Always Reply (Corporate Feedback to Candidates)

·         No PC / No Internet (Apply Online from mobile phone)

·         No repeat visits to WWJ (Damn the eyeballs)

·         Network (No need to own delivery-channel)

·         Outsource

·         Jobsearch is history!

Pg. No. 2

·         As far back as late 60’s, Lalit Kanodia (Chairman-Datamatics) told us in Powai, “Use Computer for make-money type of applications-not for save-money type”.

Pg. No. 5

·         Software “Agents” of Recruitment managers “negotiating” contracts of employment / retainerships with the software agents of candidates.

·         Marketing Myopia

Pg. No. 6

What would free movement of jobseekers across the globe do to recruitment? You would hire the best talent wherever it is available.

Pg. No. 7

·         Avoid adding these in the first place!

·         With USA presi dential election onl few months away this is, once again an “election – Issue”

Pg. No. 9

·         We are trying to build & launch JAM on 2 ½ persons.

Pg. No. 10

·         22 yrs

·         Jobless growth

·         In India, with UPA in power, this must wait for 5 yrs.

Pg. No. 15

·         As far as jobsites-and e-recruitment goes, we (3pjobs.com) could not even keep “behind” Monster / Naukri etc.! We could not even be “also-ran”! So, there was no attempt to “Catch-UP”. It would have futile to try to catch-up given our scarce resources. The only way is to launch WWJ (in next 4/6 weeks) and make it click, so that we leap-frog them.

Pg. No. 16

·         JAM will be.

Pg. No. 18

·         3P                                                                    WWJ / Recruitguru

·         Major corporates                                          all jobseekers / All corporates

·         Word of Mouth                                                         emails / SMS / Mobiles / TV / Newspapers / ISPs

·         Executive Search Firms                                            Jobsites / Matrimonial-Dating sites

·         Head-hunting Senior Execs.                         Network & Technology

·         Efficient / Timely execution                         Value-Added-Contents to Corpo. & Jobseekers

·         Computerised Databases.                            Datamining & Spidering / Match-Making

·         Recruitment of Sr. Execs.                             Demagraphics-based-marketing.

·         One more jobsite could not pose much of a problem to Monsterindia or Naukri (traditional) – but World-Wide-Jobs.com will NOT be a run-of-the-mill “jobsite”! – It is not even a jobsite!!

Pg. No. 19

JAM would be a far more efficient “Solution” to a jobseeker’s problem of finding-and-applying against “Relevant” jobs.

Who knows where JAM will endup?

Pg. No. 20

·         To days eFe says, ATLAS INTERACTIVE is forming a Rs. 1200 cr JV with BSNL to launch [netTV] to deliver video / music / SMS / email / web etc. – within 6 months. Comes for us at right time! Now we can partner with them to launch a JobChannel & apply online by a click on their remote

·         PC is a poor messaging device!

·         We will be the match-makers of choice where “humans” have to be matched with anything.

·         We hope to transform e-recruitment industry.

Pg. No. 21

·         Thru 3pjobs.com (1997), we pioneered e-recruitment in India but quickly lost-out to Naukri / Jobs Ahead / Jobstreet / Monster, all of whom pored millions of Rupees into their portals.

·         JAM wants to do that.

Pg. No. 22

·         To make WWJ & Recruitguru combination, a VIRTUAL EMPLOYMENT EXCHANGE.

·         To make Image-Bilder the new currency of recruitment.

·         We deciole what Industry should took like.

Pg. No. 24

·         Could there be, under pressure from developing countries, a large cross-border movement of skilled professionals, 10 years from now? E.g. Projection of 23 million unfilled jobs in USA by 2008, which millions of Indian Professionals may want to fill? This, then is an emerging opportunity for JAM. We must deliver info. about these USA jobs to Indians.

·         That is us!

Pg. No. 25

·         For the first 3 years, I intend ploughing-back into WWJ, all the mney that we earn from JAM. We will build huge capacity.

·         No risk if there are no debts.

·         Monster & Naukri cannot jettison their business model without serious consequence

·         We are at it right now! 2 ½ men & a fantastic vision! Goes hand-in-hand.

Pg. No. 27

·         If JAM clicks with BPL & TATA INDICOM subscribers, then we must become extremely aggressive to tie-up with Bharti / Reliance / BSNL / IDEA / MTNL, all with a short period of 6 months. We must not give any long period of time to Monster / Naukri / Jobstreet / Timesjobs etc. to “rethink” their strategy & come-up with “appropriate” response. A virtual monopoly of delivering jobalerts on mobile in India, would make it easy for us to enter US market. Without capturing US market, there can be no world-domination!

Pg. No. 29

·         Broad-band video-inter-viewing from home.

Pg. No. 30

·         See my today’s note to Abhi on [netTV]

·         JAM will be such an experiment in e-recruitment market.

Pg. No. 31

·         We can only extrapolate “Apply Online” mouse clicks on PCs to “apply online” clicks on mobile phones.

·         In e-recruitment space we will drive this revolution.

·         I have-in 1956 when I was working in Detroit during summer.

Pg. No. 32

·         JAM may look like extersion of delivering cricket-news as SMS on mobiles.

Pg. No. 33

·         Without a “content” (of vital interest) to interact with, whatgood is an “interactive TV”? JAM will be such a content.

·         Thru JAM, we are trying to create an alto-gether new market.

·         JAM will be a case in point.

Pg. No. 35

·         If we start “Job Advt. Blasting” on behalf on corporatcs to candidates “Searched & Shortlisted” by them using GurSearch, then that might kill “Resume Search” – also it will be something that jobsites will find very difficult to “copy” because it will destroy Resume-Search, which is their main source of revenue.

Pg. No. 37

·         We will need to tie-up with websites offering online “Testing / Profiling” of executives. (eg: Personality Types)

·         We are into e-recruitment since 1997 and still nowhere!

Pg. No. 38

·         Within 3 months of launch, we shutdown RecruitGuru, but we will relaunch it 6/12 months from now. It’s time will come once WWJ is a hit.

·         Will JAM shorten job-tenures? Will people keep changing jobs because now opportunities come knocking at the door? -oppor- tunities of which they were earlier “unaware”!

Pg. No. 39

·         In case of JAM, a subscriber can click on as many job-alerts as he likes.

·         Same here!

·         Would candidates feel more relaxed & confident, if interviewed on their interactive TVs at home? This would be a great convenience for busy executives & save a lot of money too.

Pg. No. 40

·         I don’t know how much money JAM will bring!

·         So far, no one anywhere in world, has delivered jobalerts on mobiles. If we succeed, we will write the rules.

Pg. No. 41

·         Mobile Service Providers

·         JAM

Pg. No. 47

·         We will introduce “ImageBuilder” as the new “Standard” for resumes.

Pg. No. 48

·         Nor a JAM!

Pg. No. 49

·         USA is always THE market for any product or service that wants to become global.

·         A lwsson for us, if JAM succeeds.

·         There is no doubt JAM coill be copied – if not in India, then by Monster -USA- within few months of our launch – next month. Befor that, we will introduce “Salary Profiles” / Desig. Profiles etc.

Pg. No. 50

·         11 yrs later, in 2004, cable TV is posing a serious threat & DVD Players have disolaced VCR-In turn, these will get displaced by interactive TV, (Video-on-Demand) within next 5 yrs.

·         Delivering job-alerts over mobiles.

Pg. No. 51

·         We can only ride piggyback on mobile service providers. They are our “Delivery Channels” & “Payment Collection Mechanisms” & ofcouese our marketing guys! All we have is  “content”.

·         Jobsearch on jobsites & email job-alerts

Pg. No. 52

·         Read my file “WWJ – an overview”

·         To do this, we will need to introduce “Job Advt. Blasting” by corporates (ofcousse @ Rs. 5/= for delivery to each potential jobseeker). This will make “Resume Search” unnecessary. If that happens, then 95% of the revenues of jobsites will vanish – over a few months!

·         We will upload all resumes of WWJ on RecruitGuru, where subscribing (Pay-Per-Use) corporates will use “Gurusearch” to shortlist candidates & then “Blast” their job-advt to these “pinpoint / target” group.

Pg. No. 53

·         Will Monster / Naukri feel this way when JAM gets launched?

·         Will they approach us for some kind of alliance?

Pg. No. 56

·         I suppose if someone was to launch a new jobsite to day, he will “Copy” exactly what other jobsites are offering!

Pg. No. 58

·         All jobsites are “Clones” & we are planning to challenge them, thru WWJ first & later with Recruitguru.

·         Yes amongst Monster-India Naukri Jobs Ahead (taken over by Monster) Times jobs Jobstreet Jobs DB.

Pg. No. 59

·         All revenue from corporate subscribers hardly any from Jobseekers.

·         {95% revenue from “Resume Search”

·         5% revenue from “Job Advt. Posting”}

·         Yes that is exactly what we plan to do thru GuruMine / JobMine / Mobiles / Match-Maker etc.

·         Huge Funding from VCs

·         Resume Search / Jobsearch

Pg. No. 66

·         Historical baggage.

Pg. No. 69

·         All jobsites want corporates to post their job-advts ontheir own site. By being an aggregator, WWJ does not care, who posts his job-ads where! We will promote all brands.

·         All jobsites consider corporates as their customers, jobseekers as its customers.

·         When [netTV] arrives, WWJ will deliver job-alerts into home.

·         It is all about “Delivering” & method of delivery.

Pg. No. 70

·         We are talking about as many customised jobalerts as there are subscribers (Mass-Customization).

Pg. No. 71

·         Already SIFY’S I-Way cybercafes are being used by companies for “Video-Interviewing”. We even have one on Military Road. I have today sent a not to Raju re: this

·         Next video-inter-viewing from homes.

·         JAM success will depend upon Entry-Level jobs-what with 1.5 million fresh graduates adding to jobseeking population every year!

·         JAM is all about this.

Pg. No. 72

·         Will jobsites see that, in WWJ, we are trying to create a VIRTUAL EMPLOYMENT EXCHANGE? – and that they better join!

·         We are redefining Jobseekers as customers – and they want their resumes to reach 1000 companies so that one may offer a job!

Pg. No. 73

·         Read my circulars “Communicating for Productivity” (1979/87)

Pg. No. 79

·         Number Portability

·         I think of assigning PEN to ebery person.

Pg. No. 80

·         In 2004, this is already happening. (This book was written in 1994)

·         But despite this vision-this point of view, why Motorola today is lagging far behind Nokia, Samsung, LG?

·         We will need to do same

·         This has yet to happen in 2004

Pg. No. 81

·         We never lacked foresight. Either we could not commit enough resources or we were ahead of time! (eg: Recruitguru)

Pg. No. 82

·         What would we need to beat Monster.com in USA? We cannot take on a gorilla on his home-turf! So, we must partner with Monster!

Pg. No. 83

·         We are betting a few lakhs of rupees only! If JAM fails to click we can shut shop in 3 months!

·         Regret not in case of JAM. I am the only one to blame if it fails. We will know in 2/3 months.

Pg. No. 84

·         JAM should make a difference to jobseekers of India.

·         10 years after PC!

·         Pg. No. 86

·         The similarity in our case is that BPL will share with us only 25% of what it will collect from its subscribers for each “Apply Online” click. World over content=providers get 60% - 80% share. But, at this stage, we have little choice.

Pg. No. 89

·         Example of how competitor’s “foresight” could prevail upon your foresight! Motorola’s IRIDIUM projeet never took off because Mobile-Phone-Service-Providers could offer an plternative delivery (of voice) at 10% vast!!

·         Also dead!

·         Also in trouble!

Pg. No. 90

·         Read “Marketing Myopia” by Thedore Levitt (1965?)

Pg. No. 92

·         Film is already getting obsolete for last 3 yrs with advent of digital cameras.

Pg. No. 94

·         This was written before arrival of don’t coms in 1995 & iTune / Napster in 2003/4

Pg. No. 95

·         Has not happened so far!

·         Thin Client PCs have been around for a while but not made a big dent.

·         Job Alerts are getting delivered as email on PCs

·         We plan to deliver as SMS on mobiles – a new delivery vehicle.

Pg. No. 96

·         Rattan Tata wants to sell a small car for Rs. 1 lakh by 2006! If he can, there will be millions on Indian Roads!

·         Now available for $ 300/=

·         How many more jobseekers would click “Apply Online” if tariff was dropped from Rs. 5 to Rs. 1? But first we must findout how many click @ Rs. 5!

Pg. No. 97

·         Thru JAM, we want to “reinvent the very idea” of oneway delivery of jobalerts on PC. By enabling “Apply Online” on mobile we are changing “rules of the game”.

·         People who call their vehicle, a “space-ship”, will never reach distant galaxies. They can only cross a “sea”!

Pg. No. 98

·         On internet database.

·         Already here

·         Under trial in 2004

·         Spider’s web is 6 times stronger than steel of same dia.

Pg. No. 99

·         What are JAM’s innovations? Spidering (Aggregation) / JobMining / Match-Makiup / Function-Profile / Extraction (GuruMine) / Door-Dely (Mobile) / Corporate Feedback / Apply Online

Pg. No. 100

·         How about displaying job-advertising companies logo on JAM SMS?

·         For college-students

Pg. No. 102

·         Video-interviewing (from homes & cybercafes) will be the biggest “discontinuity”, 5 years from now. Between Corporates & Candidates, there will be no place for an intermediary. They will fix date / time / venue directly on their owm. I prosume future resumes will contain the IP address of broadband device on which the candidate canbe reached. Maybe here is our opportunity to tie-up with cybereades.

Pg. No. 103

·         With their quick “decision-making” culture, Americans will find this process, very difficult yo adopt.

·         20 yrs from now, will candidates sit in front of a camera that will capture his 3D images & project 10,000 miles away as a “hologram” whom recruiters can interview, across their table? This will happen, no doubt.

·         JAM’s premise too.

Pg. No. 104

·         India has 60,000 cable TV operators, reaching some 40/50 nillion homes. As a “Delivery Channel” we connot ignore them for JAM. Each TV will get an IP address.

·         Our future mktg. manager will have worked with a mobile-service provider as “New business Dev. Mgr. / UAS Manager”.

Pg. No. 105

·         This scenario was imagined in 1994 – much before Grocery.com & Peapod.com!

·         Amazon does suggest / recommend books!

Pg. No. 106

·         We have prepared a database of Indian foods-with calorie-values of each. Only a search-engine needs to be built. This was done around 2001. It will produce a fresh meny daily. All you need to specify is max calories.

·         WWJ is a supermarket of jobs! & weare door-delivery boys.

·         Will WWJ / JAM make people forget jobsearching on jobsites? Then jobsites cannot exist-and we would need to “aggregate” job-advts directly from employers.

Pg. No. 107

·         We said Recruitguru will be “pay-per-use” webservice for corporates wanting to recruit candidates & manage their resume databases. “Pay-Per-Use” like electricity / water / gas / travel / house-rent etc. etc.

·         “Door-Delivery” of jobalerts? Like newspapers.

Pg. No. 108

·         Read book “NUTS” – an excellent example of contrarian culture

·         No jobseeker came & told me he wants jobalerts on his mobile.

·         Precisely my idea in JAM. Yhey will want it, when they know they can “have” it!

Pg. No. 109

·         We will soon know if we belong to this category.

Pg. No. 110

·         Why should you waste your time conducting jobsearches? We will door-deliver, daily, fresh, matching jobs on mobile.

·         I too don’t “Know” that there is a market for JAM. But I giess there will be one, when JAM gets launched

Pg. No. 111

·         This is why JAM must be launched in USA, after capturing India – even though Indian jobseekers are not most sophisticated or most demanding.

Pg. No. 113

·         Happens to all those millions who are out-of-jobs

Pg. No. 114

·         Someday the screen of personal communicator will be big enough for Video-interviewing.

·         We want people to find any type of job (preference) anywhere in the world.
